People are increasingly starting to realize this truth due to successful grassroots campaigns. In yet another victory against this pervasive toxin, on February 8, 2011, the Calgary (Alberta, Canada) city council voted to stop 20 years of water fluoridation by a 10-3 vote. According to Calgarian James Beck, MD, PhD and co-author of The Case Against Fluoride,
"This is important for the health of 1.1 million people right here. But also it will help us stop fluoridation throughout the Province of Alberta. With the generally no-fluoridation situations in British Columbia and Quebec and the ongoing developments in Ontario we are approaching a fluoride-free Canada. And with the ongoing progress in the United States we are approaching a fluoride-free world."
But a bigger battle is still looming in New York City, where the anti-fluoridation movement has a great champion in New York City, councilor Peter Vallone, Jr. A victory there could signal the beginning of the end of fluoridation in the U.S.
Please contact Carol Kopf at firstname.lastname@example.org if you want to be part of the NYC effort and possible fluoride rally. It's important to write letters to Mayor Bloomberg, the City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, and your own City Council Member. Their contact information is here: http://council.nyc.gov/html/members/members.shtml
According to Fluoride Alert:
"Calgary [Alderman] Druh Farrell, who has led the anti-fluoridation push on council, argued that so much of the issue comes down to the ethics of it -- that people should have a choice whether something is added to water for health reasons."
Many still do not realize the proven health risks inherent with fluoridated water, but the information is spreading. If Calgary follows through on eliminating fluoride from its water supply, it will be a great victory that will help other areas in Canada and the US to push through long overdue changes. We have already seen strides being made in the US and Canada, which I'll discuss below, but we still have a ways to go.
By Sending This Message You Can Help END this Dangerous Medical Practice
On January 7, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) announced plans to reduce the recommended level of fluoride in drinking water from 0.7-1.2 mg/L to 0.7 mg/L. For many communities around the US that are fluoridated at 1.2 mg/L, the new level means a significant reduction in exposure to this hazardous neurotoxin.
While this is good news, the DHHS recommended level of 0.7 mg/L is still too high. The recommendation is based on the fact that dental fluorosis is skyrocketing, which is a clear sign of fluoride overexposure. According to recent estimates, 41 percent of adolescents aged 12-15 have dental fluorosis (Beltrán-Aguilar et al.). However, they're still ignoring all the other health effects of fluoride over-exposure, which are far more hazardous than dental fluorosis!
For example, if you reconstitute your baby's infant formula with tap water that contains 0.7 ppm fluoride, your child receives approximately 175 times more fluoride than he would if he was breastfed, so formula-fed infants are still at grave risk at this reduced level.
The public will have an opportunity to submit their comments to the DHHS until February 14.
You can easily submit your comments by using the Fluoride Action Network's online comment form.
Please, I urge you to take a moment and do so right now!
We need to FLOOD them with comments urging them to end water fluoridation completely! Tell the DHHS you do NOT want ANY of this toxin in your drinking water.
Submitting your comments is extremely important and can make a big difference. For example, when the USDA solicited comments on the first draft of organic standards they received a quarter of a million replies because it was so bad. They were stunned by the response, saying it was the largest ever received by any government agency, and as a result, they made modifications to create acceptable standards. We're hoping to do the same with fluoridation.
Calgary Poised to End Water Fluoridation as US Health Officials Admit Americans are Overexposed
A bi-partisan group of Tennessee State Representatives, including the Speaker, now want the Tennessee health department to stop promoting water fluoridation. And on November 29, 2010, the residents of Waterloo, Ontario in Canada voted to end water fluoridation after 33 years of the practice.
Calgary began to fluoridate their water in 1991 at a level of 0.7 parts per million (ppm) or 0.7 mg/L, which is the level now being recommended by US federal health officials. The majority of the fluoride opponents pushing for the Calgary reversal are doctors and medical officials, primarily from Alberta Health Services, and I hope the council decides to follow in Waterloo's footsteps.
The Calgary City Council committee vote to stop fluoridation comes just weeks after several US agencies suddenly proposed changes to the amount of fluoride Americans are exposed to. In addition to the DHHS' plans to reduce the recommended levels of fluoride:
- The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is also initiating a review of the maximum amount of fluoride allowed. Depending on their findings, the maximum amount of fluoride allowed may also be revised.
- The EPA also decided to phase out the use of sulfuryl fluoride, based on the position of three environmental groups that "children's aggregate exposure to fluoride is unsafe, and that additional exposure through pesticide residues is unlawful." The Fluoride Action Network has battled the use of this fluoride-containing food fumigant for nine years. However, Dow AgroSciences, the maker of sulfuryl fluoride, will fight the EPA's decision, claiming that continued use is “critical to agriculture.”
Water Fluoridation is a Violation of Freedom of Choice
If everyone knew the dangers of fluoride and had a choice, most would likely opt not to have it added to their water supply. Unfortunately, you don't have that choice. You're being medicated whether you want to or not if you live in a fluoridated area.
It's important to understand that fluoride is a drug and no other drug has ever been administered as a public health measure across the board in this manner. Once you put fluoride in the water, there is no way to control who gets it and how much, and if you suffer side effects, there's no recourse. Most don't even realize that their health problems are connected to fluoride toxicity.
Fluoride in water is not even regulated by the FDA -- even though it does regulate fluoride in toothpaste and other oral care products, which must bear warning labels about the danger of ingesting those products. Water fluoridation is an absolute violation of your freedom of choice—to take a drug or not, and a toxic one at that. Drugs with an attached fluoride can penetrate into sensitive tissues that used to be impenetrable.
Fluoroquinolones (fluoride-containing antibiotic- and antimicrobial drugs) require FDA black-box warnings, and some of the newer ones have been withdrawn due to toxicity. These drugs have the unique ability to penetrate your central nervous system, including your brain. And as you'll see in a moment, water fluoridation has also been linked to brain damage and reduced IQ again and again.
It's a careless and dangerous public health practice, and it's simply bad medicine. In fact, from a medical perspective, it borders on malpractice to ignore the scientific literature on fluoride.
First, fluoride is NOT an essential nutrient. Your body does not require it, and being "deprived" of fluoride will not cause disease any more than the absence of antidepressants will cause depression. In fact, prior to 1945 when communal water fluoridation took effect, fluoride was known as a toxin.
Second, the types of fluoride typically added to water supplies are not even pharmaceutical grade, which is toxic enough, but rather the chemical byproducts of aluminum, steel, cement, phosphate fertilizer manufacturing, and nuclear weapons manufacturing. Fluoride May Harm Your Child's Brain and IQ
While many are getting smart about dental fluorosis, its more harmful health effects are still largely ignored in this debate, despite the overwhelming evidence.
Part of the problem is that it's an accumulative toxin that, over time, can lead to significant health problems that are not immediately linked to fluoride over-exposure. Studies have shown that fluoride toxicity can lead to:
Increased lead absorption Disrupts synthesis of collagen Hyperactivity and/or lethargy Muscle disorders Brain damage, and lowered IQ Arthritis Dementia Bone fractures Lowered thyroid function Bone cancer (osteosarcoma) Inactivates 62 enzymes Inhibited formation of antibodies Genetic damage and cell death Increased tumor and cancer rate Disrupted immune system Damaged sperm and increased infertility
Fluoride is also known to interfere with basic functions of nerve cells in your brain and damages your pineal gland. Over 23 human studies and 100 animal studies link fluoride to brain damage. This includes such effects as:
- Reduction in nicotinic acetylcholine receptors
- Reduction in lipid content
- Impaired antioxidant defense systems
- Damage to the hippocampus
- Damage to the purkinje cells
- Increased uptake of aluminum
- Formation of beta-amyloid plaques (the classic brain abnormality in Alzheimer's disease)
- Exacerbation of lesions induced by iodine deficiency
- Accumulation of fluoride in the pineal gland
Some of these effects have been observed even at low levels of exposure, such as 1 part per million (ppm) of fluoride in water. This is below the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) 'safe' drinking water level for fluoride, which is 4 ppm, and right around the levels used in water fluoridation programs, which typically range from 0.7-1.2 ppm.
Fluoride can also increase manganese absorption, which has also been linked to lower IQ in children. To learn more, I highly recommend Dr. Connett's book, The Case Against Fluoride. You can also download my free report on water fluoridation for more information on the bad science and political agendas that got this toxic chemical in our drinking water and, at least for now, are keeping it there.
Join the Fight to Get Fluoride Out of Drinking Water
There's no doubt about it: Fluoride should not be ingested. Interestingly enough, according to the findings of a groundbreaking study published in the journal Langmuir, even the benefits of topical application of fluoride appear to be questionable at best!
At least when it comes to topical application, you have a choice. You can easily buy fluoride-free toothpaste and mouthwash. But you're stuck with whatever your community puts in the water, and it's very difficult to filter out of your water once it's added. Many do not have the resources or the knowledge to do so.
The only real solution is to stop the archaic practice of water fluoridation in the first place. Earlier this year I joined forces with Dr. Paul Connett to do just that. The Fluoride Action Network has a game plan to END water fluoridation in both Canada and the United States.
Our fluoride initiative will primarily focus on Canada since 60 percent of Canada is already non-fluoridated. If we can get Calgary and the rest of Canada to stop fluoridating their water, we believe the U.S. will be forced to follow. The most pressing Action Item is to flood the US DHHS with our comments regarding their recommendation to lower the recommended level of fluoride to 0.7 ppm. Remember, the deadline is February 14.
You can easily submit your comments by using the Fluoride Action Network's online comment form.
Please, take a moment and do so right now!
