By Dr. Mercola
This holiday season, I want to thank you for your continued support throughout the years and update you on some of the progress we made in 2012. It's been a year of many significant achievements, thanks to your support and your efforts in helping spread the message, and educate others about how to take control of their health through education and preventive strategies.
It is important to know that you ARE making a difference, and with time we will eventually reach a tipping point and change the consciousness of the public about natural health.
This is now the eight straight year Mercola.com has been the most visited natural health site on the web, and slowly but surely these messages are filtering out.
Your actions and dedication have also helped us bring the unethical practices and conflicts of interest of many private industries and government agencies, whose influence have proven harmful, to the public's attention.
Here are just a few examples of our continued progress and successes that could not be accomplished without your help.
Proposition 37 — GMO Labeling Initiative in California
Being that California has the 8th largest economy in the world and is one of the leaders in helping to make policy changes when needed, we achieved great success in alerting the public to the dangerous and harmful effects of genetically engineered foods through our repeated attention to this initiative.
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful; committed citizens can change the world; indeed, that is the only thing that ever has."
Even though victory eluded us by a very small margin, we greatly appreciate all of the tireless efforts and amazing support the initiative received. We view this effort as an important milestone in significantly increasing the public's awareness of the dangerous practice of selling unlabeled genetically engineered foods. Over 60 other nations require labeling, and many areas have even banned the growing of GE crops, citing lack of safety and environmental harms. No one knows what potentially limitless effects genetically engineered foods are currently having on us, and will have on future generations.
Though our grassroots efforts raised just over $10 million dollars, it was not able to compete with the over $45 million dollars spent by the goliaths in the food and chemical industries on their deceptive advertising campaign to ensure the practice of withholding critical information can continue. Still, despite losing that battle, we were victorious in bringing this dangerous practice out of the shadows, and we can still, in the end, win the war...
The field of action has now moved to other states, such as Washington state and Vermont — both of which are now working on their own people's initiatives to get GMO labeling laws passed.
The fact that our attempt to add a simple informational label to genetically engineered foods is being so venomously opposed by those who have a vested interest in producing such foods should concern everyone. We all have a fundamental right to know everything about the foods we eat, and the fact that food manufacturers have to tell you how many calories, fat, or salt a product contains, but not whether or not it contains ingredients that have been altered at the genetic level, is just plain wrong.
We will not be deterred in our mission to continue to educate and arm you with the strategies needed to get genetically engineered foods labeled in the United States as in so many other countries. I also want to update you on the wonderful progress our non-profit Health Liberty Coalition has made on all fronts.
Dangers of Mercury in Dentistry Becoming More Widely Acknowledged
Tremendous strides in our efforts to eliminate mercury-containing dental amalgams (commonly mislabeled "silver" fillings) have been made. With your help in sharing information regarding the dangers of the neurotoxic poison found in these fillings, and with your demand for change, more and more patients and dentists are refusing to use amalgam fillings.
As an organization based in the United States, Consumers for Dental Choice has worked to educate its own government about dental mercury pollution and the many mercury-free alternatives to amalgam. In March of last year, their diligence paid off, as the U.S. government, in its official submission to UNEP's mercury treaty negotiations, called for both the "eventual phase out" of amalgam and prompt "phase down" steps, including many of our recommendations, such as:
- "Educating patients and parents"
- "Protecting children and fetuses"
- "Training of dental professionals on the environmental impacts of mercury in dental amalgams"
From a government whose device regulator (FDA) had previously refused to educate the public about amalgam's mercury content or take any steps to protect vulnerable populations, it was a welcome – even spectacular – development for the cause of mercury-free dentistry.
Since then, governments from around the world have joined the push for mercury-free dentistry, including the Arab League, the African region, the Council of Europe, and numerous other developing nations. Most recently, in a letter to European Union (EU) member state representatives and dental experts, the European Environmental Bureau (EEB) asked recipients to support a phase-out of the use of mercury in dentistry, both in the EU and around the world. It's still a rocky road ahead, but with continued effort, we are confident that eventually we will be able to ensure safe dentistry for everyone, everywhere.
Success in Getting Fluoride Out of Drinking Water in Many Areas
We are very impressed with the wonderful progress the Fluoride Action Network has made in our efforts to achieving fluoride-free water throughout the world. Dr. Connett and his team will continue their mission to educate people on the dangers of fluoride and their efforts to protect everyone's right to have access to safe, fluoride-free water.
The fluoride debate finally got some well-deserved media attention this year, following the undemocratic process adopted by the five-member City Council of Portland, Oregon. Citizens had already voted 'no' on water fluoridation for Portland on three separate occasions, clearly demonstrating the public will on this subject. Despite that, on September 12, the council announced they'd approved the plan to add fluoride to Portland's water supplies by March 2014. In response, the residents rallied for a referendum.
In an inspiring show of people power, the city collected TWICE the needed signatures to qualify the referendum to give citizens the right to vote on fluoridation1. In the past year, campaigns around the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, have made great strides to end the harmful practice of adding fluoride — which you'd have to get a doctor's prescription for, were you to want to take it in pill form — to community drinking water.
Vaccine Safety Will Continue to Be a Top Priority
With Barbara Loe Fisher at the helm, The National Vaccine Information Center's (NVIC) ongoing advances in demanding informed consent regarding vaccinations and protecting your freedom to choose have been remarkable. The NVIC has been the leader in this endeavor for over 30 years and will continue to challenge and expose the risks vs. the benefits of utilizing vaccines routinely, rather than cautiously, and they will continue to stand strong against forced vaccinations.
Change in Public Consciousness Will Change the Medical Paradigm
As some of you know, 2012 was a year of wellness awakening in the United States. Basically, people are tired of being sick and overweight, and they are frustrated with symptom management through pharmaceuticals. People are hungry for knowledge on how live well, in order to be well. This is information we have continuously provided, without let-up, for well over a decade. It is exciting to see some of our efforts bear fruit. Topics we have repeatedly discussed are now being covered by the mainstream media and are becoming increasingly accepted by the mainstream medical community, such as:
Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays, and a Healthy, Prosperous New Year!

There are many more critical issues we will continue to work on together, to increase public awareness. Not one of the goals achieved so far could have been achieved without your support in these efforts to protect our fundamental right to have access to safe foods, healthcare choices, and to our fundamental right to have access to all of the facts regarding the risks vs. benefits of those choices.
|"The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patient in the care of the human frame, in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease."
I greatly appreciate your continued support and I believe we can all be proud of the amazing progress our united front has achieved in our common goal to secure a happy, healthier future, not only for ourselves but for generations to come. I look forward to continuing to inform and support you in the New Year on our journey toward empowering everyone to take control of their health.
