In a study that sounds more like a work of science fiction than reality, scientists harnessed human pluripotent stem cells, which divide indefinitely and become any type of cell in the body, to create human-pig embryos. The creation of this chimera is being heralded as a breakthrough that could one day lead to the ability to 'grow' human organs in pigs, but serious and unforeseen consequences could result.
