Artificial Sweeteners Don't Increase Satiety

Posted By Dr. Mercola | February 02 2011 | 649 views

Artificial sweeteners such as sucralose (Splenda) may not increase levels of satiety inducing hormones. This suggests that eating common dietary doses of sucralose does not affect subjective feelings of appetite or energy intake at later meals.

Specifically, research shows that the sweetener does not increase plasma levels of the satiety inducing gut hormones glucagon-like peptide (GLP-1) and peptide YY (PYY).

According to the study:

"... [O]ral ingestion of sucralose does not increase plasma GLP-1 or PYY concentrations and hence, does not reduce appetite in healthy subjects. Oral stimulation with sucralose had no effect on GLP-1, insulin or appetite."
