At the time, the U.S. FDA responded by issuing a mere safety warning on the drug, leaving it open for continued sale and use in the U.S. Now a whistleblower has come forward with a lawsuit of her own, stating that the drug company making Actos, Takeda Pharmaceuticals, is benefiting in “tens of billions of dollars in sales” at the expense of the lives of people still taking the drug.

Dr. Helen Ge worked for Takeda in the company’s pharmacovigilance division, where she was in charge of reviewing side effects of Actos that were reported by patients and doctors. She then prepared safety reports that were filed with the FDA―reports that Ge says she was ordered to water-down or not report at all, so Actos would look better than it actually was. She believes Actos is even more dangerous than Avandia, a drug that has been removed from pharmacies because of the risk of heart attacks. Dr. Ge says that besides bladder cancer and tumors, Actos is also connected to heart attacks and stroke, suicide, schizophrenia, homicidal ideation, and renal failure. Dr. Ge filed her lawsuit in September 2011. But so far, Actos is still being sold in the U.S.

10 Dangerous Products You Might Have in Your Home

Product recalls are happening all the time, but even so countless products that have been judged safety hazards still linger in the possession of consumers who either don’t know about the recalls, or don’t care. For example―200,000 furnaces were recalled in February due to fire hazards, but 93 percent of the nearly 400 reported incidents with these furnaces occurred AFTER the recall.

So, just in case you’d like to know, Time Moneyland has posted a list of 10 recalled products you might still have around. For the present, researchers plan to use this new model to test vaccines before trialing them in actual newborns.

They’re already using the model to test adjuvants, vaccine components that boost efficacy and immunologic duration. An immunologist at the University of California said he hopes this research will be a way to speed up vaccine development for newborns, possibly cutting trials from eight weeks to just one. “If I want to test 1000 vaccine candidates, I could use this system to do so in a very short period of time,” Sukumar Pal told New Scientist.

Is This the WORST Place to Store Your Cell Phone?

When a young women with no other risks for cancer came down with multi-focal breast cancer, her physician concluded there was only one other possibility that could have caused it. “We connected the dots,” the patient said. Phthalates have been in the news a lot recently, as suspect causes of allergies, asthma and other chronic conditions. Scientists also believe they disrupt hormones. Flooring materials use softened PVC, which contains phthalates, and have previously been shown to be a significant source of phthalates in indoor dust. The findings show that phthalates can be ingested into the human body in all sorts of ways.

“With this study as a basis, we can establish that there are other sources that should be taken into consideration in regard to the uptake of banned chemicals and that we do not only ingest them in our food,” says Carl-Gustaf Bornehag, professor of public health at Karlstad University and leader of the study.

Could this Villified Oil Actually Be Healing?

A much-maligned oil and tree fruit that’s been the subject of ridicule and disdain for many years could actually be good for you, new research shows.
The state claims the bees were destroyed because they were infected with a disease called foulbrood. But when the 58-year apiary keeper had his hearing, the state’s “evidence” had disappeared, leaving more questions than answers about the raid on the beekeeper’s hives. Some people, including the beekeeper, Terrence Ingram, suspect the raid has more to do with Ingram’s 15 years of research on Monsanto’s Roundup and his documented evidence that Roundup kills bees than it does about any concerns about his hives. Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle penned the crowning achievement when he signed a bill banning the bags beginning July 1, 2015. While Honolulu's new law gives leeway to retailers who feel like clinging to the stuff for a while, within three years Hawaii will be the first state in the union to have banned the bags everywhere in the state.

The deed was accomplished by each of the state’s counties banning them on an individual basis. Carlisle’s signature in the last county to ban the bags completed the act of essentially making it a statewide rule without ever having to go before the state legislature. Some of the bans are already in place or scheduled to begin next year, with fines of up to $1,000 for each day of violation.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles became the largest city in the nation to ban plastic bags at supermarket checkout lanes. The city gave stores 16 months to phase them out. San Jose, San Francisco, and Long Beach, California have already banned them.

U.S. Experts Say No More Routine PSA Tests for Prostate Cancer

In a startling reversal of years of pressing healthy men to get routine PSA prostate tests, U.S. health officials now say these tests do more harm than good. What’s more, the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) said they aren’t recommending the tests for men of any age. The task force is basing its new stance on research that shows that only one out of every 1000 men who are screened would actually benefit from the exam.

Screening advocates immediately protested, saying the new recommendation will cost lives. But critics of PSA testing responded that, instead, thousands of men will be spared impotence and incontinence that occurs as a result of needless cancer treatment. The PSA is a blood test that measures certain antigens that are specific to the prostate. Radiation oncologist Anthony D’Amico of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston told the news service Reuters that PSA screening does cause overdiagnosis, but he added that he was shocked the task force would “let people die” in order to avoid incontinence and erectile dysfunction in the overdiagnosed cases.

Veteran Reporter Details How Corporate Media Is Bought Off by Corporations

It’s not news that some people think news coverage is guided by corporate and political interests and profits. But it is news when someone who’s spent his life reporting the news accuses his own profession of political slant and bias. The slam came from none other than Dan Rather, a former CBS News anchor who’s written a book, “Rather Outspoken,” on his life as a journalist. Currently no more than six companies control 80 percent of the news. And what that means, Rather told Huffington Post, is:

“These large news corporations, they have things they need from the power structure in Washington, whether it’s Republican or Democrat, and of course the people in Washington have things they want the news to be reported. To put it bluntly, very big business is in bed with very big government in Washington, and has more to do with what the average person sees, hears, and reads than most people know.”

Other journalists are beginning to blow the whistle on the marriage of press and corporate and political interests too: recently investigative journalist Robert Parry accused the Washington press corps of being wishy-washy when it comes to asking politicians to answer tough questions. Another journalist, columnist Chris Hedges, has written commentaries about what happens when corporations take over and ultimately cause revolutions like the Occupy movement.

Most Commonly Used Herbicide Found to be Carcinogenic

Glysphosate, the core ingredient found in Monsanto’s Roundup, is toxic to human cells and is carcinogenic. That’s the bare-bones truth according to a French research team that studied the herbicide extensively, and published at least five articles on glysphosate’s potential for wide-ranging environmental and human harm.

It doesn’t matter that the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health recently published “research” to the contrary, the French team says―the world needs to know the truth about who did that “safety-finding” research and who paid for it. And the truth is the very company with the most to lose if its products are found to harm human health―Monsanto―is the one behind the research that voila! found glysphosate safe.

The new Monsanto-paid-for safety research actually used the French team's original research to debunk scientific evidence that Roundup could have human or environmental safety issues. And that didn't sit well with the French team, which was so angered that they wrote a detailed response to Monsanto's article, accusing the new researchers of minimalizing the French group’s work and publishing misleading information in the Monsanto review. One of the Monsanto-backed team’s major flaws was their total disregard for the scientific context within which their glysphosate research was performed―namely, the DNA-damaging and carcinogenic potential of the chemical, according to Green Med Info.

Study Shows Barefoot Running Is Less Efficient

A category of runners who believe barefoot is best may be surprised to learn that a new study shows they’re not getting the boost they thought they were from going sans shoes.
