An EWG analysis found troubling levels of fluoride in 8 of 10 dog foods tested. The concentration of fluoride was up to 2.5 times higher than the safe level the EPA sets for drinking water. Some puppies may be exposed to five times this limit.

The fluoride in dog foods originates in bone meal and animal by-products. EWG recommends choosing dog food brands free of bone meal and meat by-product ingredients like chicken by-product meal, poultry by-product meal, chicken meal and beef meal.

FDA Changes Tylenol Warnings

FDA advisers have recommended lowering the maximum dose of over-the-counter acetaminophen -- the key ingredient in Tylenol, Excedrin and many other pain-killing medications.

The advisers' vote followed the release of a report last month which found that severe liver damage and even death can result from a lack of consumer awareness that acetaminophen can cause such injury.

Many people may take more than the recommended dose of acetaminophen-based pain relievers in the mistaken belief that taking more will be more effective without posing health risks. And consumers may also not know that acetaminophen is present in many over-the-counter products, including remedies for colds, headaches and fevers, making it possible to exceed the recommended acetaminophen dose accidentally.

Holistic Auto Repair

Here’s a unique way to diagnose a car’s problems.

Lack of Sleep Hits Women Harder

Research suggests that lack of sleep raises a woman's risk of heart disease more than it does for a man.

Sleeping less than the recommended eight hours a night has been linked to a raised risk of heart problems. But researchers found that levels of inflammatory markers -- indicators of heart disease -- vary significantly with sleep duration in women, but not men.

The study found levels of a molecule called interleukin-6, which is known to trigger inflammation, were much lower in women who reported sleeping eight hours compared to those who slept for only seven hours.

Levels of the molecule known as high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, which is linked to heart problems, were significantly higher in women who reported sleeping for five hours or less.

Walnuts Can Cut Your Cholesterol

A meta-analysis of walnuts by Harvard scientists has found that diets rich in these nuts can significantly reduce cholesterol levels. This supports growing evidence suggesting that walnuts can improve healthy blood lipid ratios.

In their investigation of thirteen studies, the researchers demonstrated that walnut-rich consumption decreased total and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol during short term trials.

Their analysis joins a growing body of science that has linked nut consumption, also including almonds and macadamias, to improvements in markers of cardiovascular health.

Natural Remedies for Hot Flashes

According to experts, about 70 percent of women experience hot flashes, weight gain, loss of libido and other symptoms as they enter menopause and their hormone levels fluctuate sharply.

Gynecologists estimate that a third of women seeking treatment for menopausal symptoms are on conventional prescription hormones. Another third are on prescription bio-identical therapy. The remaining third either tough it out or are searching for other remedies, including natural supplements. They may try, for example, a supplement of phytoestrogens derived from soy and red clover, or black cohosh capsules.

In 2002, a study suggested that women on conventional hormone therapy were at greater risk for heart disease, cancer, stroke and blood clotting. As a result, the market for alternative treatments has soared, and there are now more than 500 products that aim to relieve symptoms associated with menopause, including capsules, tablets, teas, gels and creams.

Journalist Accuses WHO of Plan to Commit Mass Murder

Austrian investigative journalist Jane Burgermeister has started a lawsuit against the World Health Organization, accusing them of complicity in the intentional release of deadly viruses by Baxter Labs. When a Czech scientist tested their vaccines, he found that they contained live H5N1 and live H3N2 viruses.

Burgermeister alleges that mandatory vaccines will be purposely contaminated with diseases.

Burgermeister’s charges include evidence that Baxter deliberately sent out 72 kilos of live bird flu virus, supplied by the WHO in the winter of 2009. She claims this is proof that drug companies and government agencies are actively engaged in distributing deadly biological agents in order to trigger a pandemic.

Infant Colic Linked to Depression in Fathers

Studies have suggested that excessive newborn crying, also known as colic, is more likely if their mothers are depressed. Now, researchers are asking whether colic also may be more common in children of depressed men.

Researchers looked at 7,600 babies and their parents, screening both mothers and fathers during pregnancy and following up two months after birth. They found a link to depression in fathers as well as mothers.

The study probably actually underestimates the link between depression and colic, because parents who were depressed during pregnancy were less likely to complete the surveys.

Sugar's Close Connections to Slavery

This video explores the dark history and modern power of the world's reigning sugar cartels. The problem is widespread and increasing, with potentially severe repercussions for overall health.

The report reviewed the scope and causes of low vitamin D levels in six regions: Asia, Europe, Latin America, Middle East and Africa, North America and Oceania.

Although there is ongoing debate as to what constitutes the optimal level of vitamin D, the report shows that regardless of how optimum levels are defined, vitamin D status is seriously inadequate in large proportions of the population across the globe.

Daily Sex Can Improve Fertility

Daily sex (or ejaculation) improves men's sperm quality by reducing the amount of DNA damage, according to a study.

Until now, there has been no consensus amongst fertility specialists as to whether or not men should refrain from sex for a few days before attempting to conceive with their partner.

Researchers studied more than 100 men who had higher than normal sperm DNA damage as indicated by a DNA Fragmentation Index (DFI). The men were instructed to ejaculate daily for seven days, and no other treatment or lifestyle changes were suggested. Before they started, levels of DNA damage ranged between 15 percent and 98 percent DFI. When the men's sperm was re-assessed on the seventh day, 81 percent of the men had an average 12 percent decrease in their sperm DNA damage.

Krill Beats Fish Omega-3's in Battling Metabolic Dysfunctions

Omega-3’s sourced from krill are more effective than fish oil in combating some metabolic symptoms, including raised fat levels in the heart and liver and violent mood swings.

The study concludes that while both fish-sourced and krill-sourced omega-3 fats are effective in reducing fat levels, krill is more effective.

The researchers said the mechanisms of why this was the case had not been made clear in the study, but suggested long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) may reduce activity in the endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system consists of a group of neuromodulatory lipids and receptors that influence appetite, pain sensation, mood and memory.

12 Food Additives to Remove From Your Diet

Many food additives have been studied and linked to various diseases. Becoming informed about the additives in everyday food items can make for an easier shopping experience and healthier food for everyone.

Here’s a list of some of the most medically questionable and harmful additives in everyday foods:

Sodium nitrite

BHA & BHT

Propyl gallate

Monosodium glutamate

Trans fats

Aspartame

Acesulfame-K

Food colorings (Blue, Red, Green, Yellow)

Olestra

Potassium bromate

White sugar

Sodium chloride (salt)

Since some of these may not be familiar to you, sodium nitrite is a preservative added most commonly bacon, ham, hot dogs, sandwich meats, and smoked fish. BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) and BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) are other preservatives added to foods like cereal, gum, potato chips, and vegetable oils. Propyl gallate is found in meats, chicken soup base, and gum. All of these preservatives have been linked to cancer.

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) can cause migraines and other adverse effects. Trans fats are being eliminated from most foods, as the studies linking them to heart disease, strokes, and kidney problems are widely accepted.

Aspartame is an artificial sweetener found in products like NutraSweet and Equal as well as diet foods and soft drinks. And acesulfame-K is a newer sweetener used in soft drinks and some baked goods.

Many food colorings have been banned by the FDA, but some can still be found in foods that require a particular color. Olestra was common for a time in potato chips as an additive that prevented fat from being absorbed in the digestive system. Food colorings have been tied to cancer and Olestra blocks vitamins from being processed.

Potassium bromate is sometimes added to white flour, breads, and rolls to increase the volume of the products, but it has cancer-causing properties that have prompted some states in America to actually require a label to that effect.

Finally, white sugar and sodium chloride (salt) can be dangerous if not kept to a minimum.

Bruce Lee Plays Ping Pong -- With Nunchucks

You won’t believe the superhuman skills demonstrated by the legendary Bruce Lee in this video.

Drug Companies at Odds With FDA Over Acetaminophen Risk

Johnson & Johnson, Procter & Gamble and other manufacturers are arguing that cough and cold drugs with the pain reliever acetaminophen should stay on the market, in spite concerns from U.S. regulators.

The FDA is weighing a ban on combination products, which are often marketed to consumers with colds or other mild illnesses. The industry instead urged a widespread effort to warn buyers about the risks of liver damage linked to the acetaminophen.

Too much acetaminophen has been known to cause liver injury for decades, but FDA officials are worried that the rise of products that combine it with other medications will lead consumers unknowingly to overdose by taking too much of a medication, or by taking too many different products at once.
