Rhabdomyolysis can potentially lead to various health complications, but fortunately the disease is preventable. The main goal when it comes to preventing rhabdomyolysis is exercising in moderation, staying hydrated and getting lots of rest. In other situations, weaning off drug use and transitioning to more natural methods can lead to stronger, healthier muscles.

Get Sufficient Rest

Mild cases of rhabdomyolysis can be treated and prevented by getting adequate amounts of rest. The recommended duration is around 72 hours before you can begin exercising again. This means that you should not engage in any form of exercise, and simply go about your day normally. You should also get around eight hours of sleep to help your muscles recover promptly.1

Remember to Stay Hydrated at All Times

It’s recommended that you stay properly hydrated at all times, even if you’re not a high-level athlete. By keeping your fluid intake constant, you can lower your risk of electrolyte imbalances, as well as exhausting your muscles too much while exercising.2

To stay hydrated, take adequate amounts of water before, during and after exercising, or with any other strenuous activity, especially during a hot day. This will help keep your muscles from shutting down and damaging your kidneys.3 The required amount of hydration varies from person to person, but you should drink enough water to keep your urine a constant light-yellow throughout the day.

Don’t Overexert Yourself While Exercising

You may feel tempted to push yourself harder than before whenever you exercise, but this can actually work against you. Pushing yourself beyond the limit during each session can cause muscle pain and extreme fatigue, both of which can cause rhabdomyolysis.

In addition, you must exercise caution when doing “eccentric” movements, according to fitness publication STACK. Eccentric movements are actions wherein a muscle is loaded with a weight, but not contracting. A good example is lowering the weight on a Kettlebell Swing workout.4

Genetic Conditions May Require Special Assistance

Genetic muscle disorders can be very cumbersome to those who have it, and ignoring the symptoms can ultimately lead to muscle failure. If you have McArdle’s disease, you should limit your exercising to a certain point because your muscles lose energy right away. To remain fit, it’s recommended that you try gentler, low-impact exercises such as swimming or moderated biking.5

Reduce Dependence on Medication and Switch to Safer Treatment Methods

Drugs such as statins are used to lower cholesterol levels, but they can cause muscle weakness and, eventually, rhabdomyolysis. If you’re currently relying on statins to lower your cholesterol or treat cardiovascular disease, you may want to switch to more natural and healthier approaches.

One of the best things you can do is to improve your diet with healthy foods that can help maintain your cholesterol levels naturally. Foods such as coconut meat and coconut oil, grass fed milk and beef, avocados and omega-3 fats from organic fish such as wild Alaskan salmon can contribute to improving cholesterol levels.

Consult With a Doctor for Additional Assistance

If you’ve just recovered from a bout of rhabdomyolysis, it’s better to take things easy until your body has properly recovered. To be sure you can resume your normal activities, consult with an experienced physician to find out if you still have a risk of complications.
