How to Prevent Seborrheic Dermatitis Effectively

Proper Bathing

Story at-a-glance -

  • Make it a point to wash your skin regularly to eliminate excess sebum from the body and reduce the number of fungal germs
  • Wearing smooth-textured cotton clothing is a must, since cotton helps the air to circulate around the skin and potentially reduce irritation

Fortunately, you can prevent seborrheic dermatitis from affecting you or someone you know. Take note of the following prevention strategies that you can practice.

The Importance of Proper Skincare If You Have Seborrheic Dermatitis

Because seborrheic dermatitis usually affects a person’s scalp, upper chest, back and/or face,1 you need to ensure that your skin is always clean and primed to combat this skin condition. Make it a point to wash your skin regularly2 to eliminate excess sebum from the body and reduce the number of fungal germs.3

Don’t forget to rinse the soap completely off the body and scalp when bathing, and consider adding a moisturizer to your routine that you can use after bath time. Avoid harsh soaps and skincare products that contain alcohol, since they can cause the condition to worsen.4

It’s important to take measures in softening and removing scales from the hair too. You can do this by applying mineral or high-quality olive oil onto your scalp. Leave the oil on for an hour or so. Afterward, comb or brush your hair and then wash it. If your eyelids show signs of redness or scaling, gently clean and wash them nightly using a mild baby shampoo, and then use a cotton swab to wipe scales. You can also use warm or hot compresses to help prevent scales from worsening.

Meanwhile, people with a beard or a moustache should consider shaving them off to help with alleviating symptoms. Seborrheic dermatitis is known to worsen under beards or moustaches. For babies with cradle cap, use a non-medicated shampoo and wash their scalp gently once a day. Use a small and soft-bristled brush to gently loosen the scales prior to rinsing out the shampoo.

Avoid scratching your skin as much as possible, especially parts that may already be affected. By doing so, you may increase irritation and infection risk. If you have the urge to scratch your skin, natural remedies like baking soda, colloidal oatmeal, apple cider vinegar or lemon may help alleviate the itch.5

Be Mindful of What You Wear

If you have seborrheic dermatitis, wearing smooth-textured cotton clothing is a must, since cotton helps the air to circulate around the skin and potentially reduce irritation.6

However, non-organic cotton production can be toxic to the planet, since cotton crops are typically sprayed with harmful pesticides and chemicals, and deplete water sources due to their high demands for water. Plus, cotton-blend fabrics, when washed, can introduce microfibers that can clog and pollute the Earth’s water.

Therefore, try purchasing clothes made from organic cotton, hemp, silk, wool and bamboo fabrics instead. While clothes made from these fabrics may cost a bit more, proper care allows them to last longer and enables you to get your money’s worth, without being a burden to the planet.

Eat the Right Foods If You Have This Skin Condition

Some foods in your diet may have an effect on the flare-ups triggered by seborrheic dermatitis.7 Ideally, eating the right foods and following a proper diet containing mostly organically grown and GMO-free whole foods will greatly help relieve symptoms.8,9 Refrain from consuming processed foods, excessive amounts of saturated fats, foods rich in refined sugar and food allergens like coffee, dairy products, wheat products, gluten-rich foods, corn and peanuts.10 11
