Researchers have been experimenting with adding fruit such as blueberries into beef, chicken and turkey burgers. The fruit makes the burgers more nutritious by adding antioxidants and decreasing fat content, improves texture by making juicier burgers, and helps berry farmers sell their crops.

Other fruits such as cherries and prunes have also been added to burgers. Members of the fruit industry are beginning to compete for shares of the fruit-filled burger market as interest in the product increases.

Researchers are planning taste tests for the fruit burgers and hope to offer the new burgers to the federal school lunch program.

I am a major fan of blueberries, not only for their taste but also for their potent brain benefits. Blueberries are also high in cancer-fighting antioxidants.

However, the biggest benefit of blueberries may be in preventing the formation of heterocyclic amines, carcinogenic substances that are formed when meats are cooked at high temperatures by frying, boiling or barbecuing. Certain fruits like blueberries and cherries can drastically inhibit the formation of the heterocyclic amines.

Blueberries also contain a variety of potent phytochemcials that can do wonders to normalize and improve health, and since they are low in sugar they won’t stimulate severe insulin swings if eaten in moderation.

However, if you eat too many blueberries, you will release too much sugar in your system that will cause insulin levels to rise and, eventually, a worsening rather than an improvement in your health, so enjoy all that blueberries have to offer but be careful to not overdo it.
