In a presentation given at the annual conference of Consumer Health of Canada, Sally Fallon, President of the Weston A. Price Foundation, argued that traditional food processing, such as fermentation to preserve food and make it more digestible.

It actually enhances or increases the nutrient value of food. Industrial processing, however, destroys the nutrients in food and makes it more difficult to digest, and depends on products that have negative effects on human health, such as sugar, white flour, hydrogenated oils, extruded grains, and synthetic vitamins.

As a result, industrially processed foods, including "healthy" breakfast foods such as cereal, milk, and orange juice, are actually harmful. For all boxed breakfast cereals, for example, grains are extruded -- forced out of a hole at high temperature and pressure -- making them into the various shapes typically found in breakfast cereals.

However, the extrusion process destroys most of the nutrients in the grains, including fatty acids and even the added chemical vitamins.

She recommended a return to more traditional methods of preparing foods, such as using bone broth rather than soups made from hydrolyzed proteins, butter rather than trans-fat laden margarine, and porridge made from soaked grains rather than boxed breakfast cereals.

Let's face it, if you are eating breakfast outside of your home you are simply asking for trouble. Nearly every restaurant serves breakfast food that will not improve your health and only bring it down.

It is nearly impossible to eat a healthy breakfast outside of your home, and this is largely a result of the serious confusion and misconceptions many people have about a healthy diet.

Your body is designed to eat natural foods, meaning those as they are found in nature and not artificial substances created in a lab that make up the typical building blocks for processed foods, no matter what the so-called experts tell you about how "safe" and "natural" they are.

Milk is perfectly healthy for you to drink, until it's pasteurized, stripping away the beneficial bacteria your body needs. Orange juice is often contaminated with mold from damaged fruits that were inadvertently processed.

While freshly squeezed organic orange juice can be a health food for some, for most of the country it will likely push their physiology in the wrong direction as a result of its influence on insulin levels.

Even dry cereals labeled as low-sugar products are no more nutritious than their sweeter counterparts.

Trans fats and high fructose corn syrup are two of the unnatural scourges that have created an epidemic of degenerative diseases in the modern world, as are artificial sweeteners and the vast numbers of additives, preservatives and artificial flavorings in the modern diet.

There are many reasons why industrially processed foods are not optimal for your health -- for instance they often contain acrylamide, and they certainly have little nutritional value. In addition, 75 percent of industrially processed foods contain genetically modified (GM) ingredients.

So rather than point out the problem, I like to focus on solutions and one of the easiest ones is to consider breakfast more like a lunch or dinner and eat those foods for breakfast.

Of course this will not be easy to do if you are eating out, but most of the time you aren't.

Remember one of the key principles in staying healthy is that someone has to spend some time in the kitchen preparing your food, either you or a relative or someone you are paying.

The other key is to plan your meals. If you fail to plan you are planning to fail. If you don't know what you are going to have for breakfast and lunch before you go to bed you are making a mistake. You should have a clear idea and have those feeds ready for your use in the morning when you awake.
