Can Exercising at Night Hurt Your Sleep?

Exercising at Night

Story at-a-glance -

  • Despite widespread beliefs that late-night exercise interferes with sleep, a study published in 2011 found that when people exercised vigorously for 35 minutes right before bed they slept just as well as on nights when they didn’t exercise
  • A poll by the National Sleep Foundation found that 83 percent of people said they slept better when they exercised (even late at night) than when they did not
  • In some people, late-night exercise may not interfere with sleep, but if you find that exercise keeps you up, wrap up your workouts a few hours before bedtime
  • Exercising in the morning and afternoon have also been shown to be especially beneficial for fat burning and regulating your circadian rhythm, respectively
  • I generally discourage vigorous exercise in the evenings, but ultimately the best time for you to exercise is when you will do it consistently; listen to your body and let it guide you
