Preterm birth (which is responsible for 28 percent of newborn deaths during the first month of life) is defined as a baby being born before 37 weeks of gestation, and preterm birth rates have risen two years in a row, hitting 9.8 percent in 2016 — a 2 percent increase from the year prior.
