What does your Teflon-coated nonstick cookware have to do with the atomic bomb? The chemical behind it - one of the polyfluoroalkyl or perfluoroalkyl chemicals (PFASs) - was created on accident during the Manhattan Project, during a time when chemists were scrambling to create new, extraordinary bomb-building materials, most of which turned out to be highly toxic.
