Scombroid Poisoning Could Be The Most Common Reason For Allergic Reactions to Seafood

  • The process of preserving finned seafood may increase your risk of scombroid poisoning, as bacteria commonly found on the fish convert histidine, found in most protein cells, to histamine; once formed, the fish will appear fresh but the histamine is resistant to cooking, smoking, freezing and canning
  • Ingestion of histamine-burdened fish triggers reactions very similar to food poisoning, including nausea and vomiting, headaches and hives; occasionally sufferers may also experience hypotension, bronchospasms and respiratory distress
  • Fish caught in the tropics and subtropics may be contaminated with ciguatera as a result of eating fish that have eaten infected algae; symptoms similar to scombroid are present and neurological symptoms may also appear, lasting several years
  • To avoid scombroid and ciguatera poisoning, do not turn to farmed fish for your omega-3 requirement as they destroy the environment and are often full of pesticides

Seafood include both finned fish and shellfish. Finned fish most commonly associated with allergic reactions include salmon, tuna and halibut. Finned fish and shellfish allergies are not related, so being allergic to one doesn’t necessarily mean you are allergic to the other.

A true Immunoglobulin-E (IgE) mediated allergic reaction to finned fish may be life-threatening, as it can trigger anaphylactic shock. According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, symptoms of finned fish allergies don’t usually appear until adulthood, and include hives, nausea and vomiting, headaches, wheezing and upper respiratory congestion.
