The federal food assistance program, known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), has succeeded in reducing hunger but, critics argue, done little to improve public health. Many are pushing for much-needed change to encourage healthy food consumption, especially as research shows SNAP participants suffer from worse health outcomes.
