How to Prevent Vitiligo

One of the most common misconceptions about vitiligo is that it is a transmittable disease. This mistake arises from the idea that vitiligo is the same as leprosy or other transmittable diseases. But the prevention of this disease does not, in any way, diminish if you choose to maintain your distance from vitiligo patients.1

Some researchers have stated that because vitiligo patches are often found in sun-exposed skin, avoiding prolonged and excessive exposure to sunlight, as well as employing measures to avoid sun damage, may help in the prevention of vitiligo.2 Other recommendations for vitiligo prevention include the following:

Avoid skin damage. Vitiligo has also been caused by skin abrasions, burns and wounds where the pigment cells were destroyed but not replenished. There have also been cases where skin damage has prompted the condition to worsen. Being careful and avoiding any instances where skin damage can occur can help you lessen the chances of melanocyte death.3

Improve nutrition and diet. The diet of a person should also be monitored because this can be an important factor in the development of vitiligo. Vitiligo patients have been observed to have multiple deficiencies in essential vitamins and minerals, some of which play an important role in the production of melanin in the skin. These vitamins and minerals include vitamin E, B12, copper and zinc.

A well-balanced diet not only ensures that the person has a lower risk of contracting vitiligo, but also helps in the prevention of other lifestyle diseases.4

Steer clear of chemical insecticides and pesticides. Constant exposure or ingestion of chemicals used in conventional farming has also been determined as one of the possible triggers for vitiligo. The abundance of these chemicals in a patient's environment has a direct effect on the immune system, which may set off the immune system to attack skin cells.5,6

Keeping Vitiligo From Spreading: Prevention Tips to Remember

For vitiligo patients, the prevention of vitiligo progression is also important. Some of the tips that physicians and health professionals have recommended include the following:

Avoid stressful situations. Stress, either emotional or physical, has been identified as one of the leading factors to the faster progression of this disease. This is often attributed to the direct impact of stress on the immune system, which may trigger an autoimmune response. By avoiding events or instances that may cause stress, you can minimize or slow down the spread of your vitiligo patches.7

Wear sun-safe clothing. Aside from the increased sensitivity to sunlight and a heightened risk for sunburn, extensive sun exposure can also lead to the spread of vitiligo. Wearing sun-safe clothing or applying natural sun protection will help in the prevention of triggering depigmentation through sunburn. Constant sun damage can heighten the risk for skin cancer as well.8

Limit exposure to chlorinated water. Chlorine is a chemical that is commonly added to water in swimming pools and numerous water supplies to help prevent bacterial proliferation. But aside from the negative health effects it may cause, constant exposure to this chemical may lead to skin damage and can aggravate vitiligo. When swimming, it is recommended that you go for freshwater pools or bodies of water to avoid contact with chlorine.9
