Cancer Drugs Don’t Necessarily Prolong Survival

The benefits of new cancer drugs are often greatly promoted by the media before the actual benefits are truly known. Drug companies do not need to prove that the drugs prolong survival, only that they cause a tumor to shrink.

This can be misleading, as often tumor shrinkage does not correlate to survival. Further, cancer drugs are often prescribed for other forms of cancer, known as off-label use, before studies have proven their effectiveness.
