Three highly respected hospitals in Chicago were accused
of manipulating diagnoses of transplant patients so they could
receive organ transplants sooner.
Two of the hospitals paid fines, and a third was sued for
$3 million. The suit said the hospital might have been trying
to meet the minimum number of liver transplants needed to
qualify for government health insurance programs.
Patients typically receive organ donations based on need.
The hospitals allegedly placed patients in intensive care
units unnecessarily and made false diagnoses to make patients
appear sicker than they really were.
