Children whose mothers were undernourished during pregnancy may be prone to obesity, hypertension, hyperphagia, hyperinsulinemia and hyperleptinemia as adults. An undernourished fetal environment may also affect lifestyle choices of children in later life.
An animal study found that offspring of undernourished rats were much less active than offspring of normal rats, and the effect remained even into later adulthood.
The study also found that it’s possible to be predisposed to obesity, altered eating behavior and a sedentary lifestyle regardless of caloric intake after birth.

From this study, it appears the prenatal environment can lead to the development of both abnormal eating and exercise behaviors, adding to previous research findings that the environment in the womb can influence physiological features of metabolic syndrome.
This "hidden" variable may help explain why some people who follow all the "rules" of weight loss, like no grains or sugars and plenty of exercise, seem to still struggle with weight loss.
Fortunately, the majority of people will achieve their ideal weight--whether that means gaining or losing pounds--when they follow the No-Grain Diet.
