Molecule in Red Wine May Activate ‘Longevity Gene’
Posted by: Dr. Mercola
October 01 2003 | 3,025 views

Researchers have discovered that a molecule called resveratrol, found in red wine, could lengthen the human lifespan by 70 percent, or up to 50 years, by switching on a "longevity gene."

The molecule inhibits fungal infection, raises HDL (good) cholesterol, lowers PSA levels in males, increases immunity, controls blood pressure, preserves red blood cells, prevents blood clots and inhibits inflammation, and studies suggest it could be a cure for cancer, heart disease and age-related brain disorders among other things.

The winemaking process keeps the resveratrol from becoming oxidized. Grape juice, raisins and resveratrol supplements provide little, if any, resveratrol.

It appears this molecule is useful for even more than longevity, as earlier this year I recommended using resveratrol as a way to further preserve vegetables and fruit.

However, don't rush out to purchase a resveratol supplement just yet as the researcher found that no product has any active ingredient. At this time the only effective source appears to be red wine, but researchers are working on methods to provide it in active supplemental form.

There are some precautions that need to be taken in regard to red wine, or any alcohol, consumption. While drinking about one glass of red wine each day may yield some benefit, drinking two or more glasses (of wine or any alcoholic beverage) may offset the benefit and increase your risk of certain cancers. And people with a history of alcohol abuse or liver disease should not drink alcohol at all. Also, people with diabetes and hypertension should limit their intake of alcohol.

You also need to be aware that consuming large amounts of wine or grapes will increase insulin levels and eventually have a negative impact on your health.

If you do drink wine, but, again, be careful not to overdo it, be sure to use a wine saver to ensure the wine doesn’t oxidize and go rancid. The Vacu Vin Wine Saver is an exceptional choice as it allows you to pump out the air inside the bottle prior to sealing, and it is very durable.
