Dental Device for Weight Loss?

Some experts asked people to heed caution against the dental device that is being promoted to help wearers shed extra pounds. The custom-made device, called the DDS system, transforms the shape of your mouth by the way it is placed on the roof of your mouth during meals.

The theory behind the device is that you are forced to take smaller bites, rather than devouring all the food on your plate at a lightening-fast pace. The amount of food eaten is reduced because of the slower pace that activates the "full" signal to the brain, which would cut back on the portions of food you eat.

Prices for this device ranges from $400 to $500 and must be properly fitted by a dentist.

Some doctors stated the device was simple, safe and easy to use, and since no pills were required it has been referred to it as a form of behavior modification therapy. One patient, Kelly Lodish, claimed over the course of one month of using the device, she lost six pounds. Lodish also described the device as an easy way for people on the go to control their portion sizes.

A two-day study of 32 overweight individuals was conducted and it was discovered that the 16 individuals who used the device consumed 25 percent less food than those who didn’t wear the device.

Experts skeptical of the device expressed concerns over people wearing the device not getting the enjoyment of food like they did in the past.

Other complaints from the device wearers included that the food lacked taste and that it didn’t go down that smoothly.

While this is certainly a less drastic option than the weight loss surgeries that are growing in popularity, it does not seem to be a practical long-term solution.

There has not been enough time for this device to be thoroughly tested for safety, however it already has two big disadvantages.

The high cost and a mandatory visit to the dentist.

The average device will run you somewhere between $400 and $500 and would involve a trip to the dentist, which is something many people prefer to put off at all costs. Then, there is always the chance the device may not work or may be too uncomfortable to wear for long-term periods.

The good news is that there are easier, less expensive and more effective ways to lose weight.

Fad diets and dental devices are not the secret to weight-loss success.

Following a healthy nutrition plan for your unique nutritional type, as described in my new book, along with a solid exercise program are the keys to losing weight safely and effectively.

Another option for weight loss is the completely nutritious meal replacement Whey Protein with Aminogen®. It’s best if you plan ahead and prepare nutritious meals from whole foods, but many people don’t take the time and are then tempted by unhealthy fast food when it comes time for lunch. As an alternative to fast food or other less nutritious meal replacements, consider Whey Protein with Aminogen®.
