Japanese "Sleep Room" Promises a Full Night's Sleep

Picture seeing images of a flowing river accompanied by the sounds of gentle guitars and piano music against a backdrop of trickling water, followed by a massage to your upper and lower back each night before you go to sleep.

A Japanese company has made this enticing sleep scenario a reality with the creation of a sleep system that guarantees eight hours of sleep a night.

Researchers hope this sleep system could help cut down the rising number of sleep disorders in Japan. A survey revealed that 31 percent of the people in Japan don't get a proper night's sleep due to extended hours spent at the office and the time spent commuting to and from the office everyday. In fact, 29 percent of the survey participants attributed stress as the reason for lack of sleep.

Because of the growing sleep problem, a variety of products such as special pillows and aromatherapy have hit the market to help people sleep.

Creating Sweet Dreams

  • The bed starts out in an upright position

  • A large TV screen positioned at eye level shows calming images of a river running through a forest

  • As the lights in the room slowly begin to fade, the TV shuts off and the music gradually gets softer

  • Sounds of the river continue while the bed is lowered to a sleeping position

  • The mattress then comes to life and performs massaging movements along the length of your spine

  • Soon the lights shut off and the massage winds down as you lapse into your first dream of the night

This sleep system doesn't come cheap; the cost is estimated at $30,000.

Sounds like a great place to sleep--but $30,000 is a lot of money to pay to get a full eight hours of sleep a night. However, people who are not getting enough sleep are paying a heftier price for the health consequences.

Sleep deprivation, a common condition that afflicts 47 million American adults, has been linked to influencing the progression of cancer and increasing the risk of developing diabetes. And in this country we have an epidemic of people who are not sleeping enough.

The average American adult now gets by on only 6.9 hours of sleep a night.

Sleep is absolutely one of the basic essentials of good health. You really can't be optimally healthy unless you are sleeping well.

Rather than waiting for the Japanese sleep system--it's expected to go on sale in June 2005--you could try to make your own peaceful room to sleep in, including some relaxing music and sleeping in complete darkness. Check out my Guide to a Good Night's Sleep for more sleep tips.

If you are interested in finding more information on this fascinating subject you can look into Lights Out: Sleep, Sugar, and Survival by T. S. Wiley and Bent Formby. Nearly one-third of the book is references to peer-reviewed literature, so it is very carefully documented.

The authors believe that it is light, not what we eat or whether we exercise, that causes obesity--and diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Since stress greatly affects the amount of sleep we get, it's important to find ways to effectively handle stressors throughout your day so they don't disrupt your sleep at night.

Along those lines, I have found an excellent tool to use in the area of stress reduction that is a remarkably effective and efficient (and very affordable) way to help you achieve inner peace and significantly reduce the stress and anxiety levels that are causing you to lose critical hours of sleep each week.

This tool is the Insight audio CD, which I personally listen to and now recommend to my patients. It's an exceptional tool to help you target daily stresses that act as a prime contributor to sleep deprivation and other sleep-related disorders.
