Big Business Ignores The Health Hazards of Sugar

If you want to get some insight into the ongoing debate over whether or not sugar is bad for your health, then you should take a look at the latest recommendations in the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee report.

The conflicting report doesn't offer any recommendations to reduce sugar from the average diet, yet six pages into the report there is a detailed list on the dangers of sugar.

Sugar is Bad For You

The following arguments have been posed by nutrition experts:

  • There is a strong relationship between sugar consumption and a deficiency of nutrient intake

  • A study revealed that people who got more than 18 percent of their calories from added sugars had the least adequately nutritious diets

  • Another study confirmed the sugar-obesity connection

  • The correlation between increased sugar-sweetened soft drink consumption and a rise in weight gain was confirmed in yet another study

"Experts" from the sugar industry disputed these findings by claiming that there haven't been any studies to support the claim that sugar is related to any lifestyle disease or increase in obesity.

Dr. Mercola Dr. Mercola's Comments:

Most all of you who read my twice-weekly newsletter regularly understand all too well the 124 ways sugar can destroy your health. Although it seems conventional medicine is finally "getting it," big business doesn't. Not even close.

Instead of making a clear-cut and sound recommendation on sugar intake, the Dietary Guideline Association decided they would try to please everyone by claiming that reducing sugar intake was not necessary. Then almost as an afterthought, deep into the report, they listed the many dangers of sugar.

This is distressing particularly because the role of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans is two-fold: to provide recommendations based on scientific research and to educate people on how dietary intake may reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

Releasing a report filled with contradictions does neither. What it does do is leave the public more confused than ever so I will try to make sense of the great sugar debate.

First and foremost, sugar is one of the biggest enemies we face in our pursuit of a healthy eating program. It appears in almost everything we eat and drink, making it virtually impossible to avoid. It is a proven fact that sugar increases insulin levels, which can lead to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, weight gain, premature aging and many more negative side effects.

Controlling insulin levels is one of the most important things you can do to optimize your health, and avoiding sugar is essential to do this.

Insulin is the key to the vast majority of chronic illness as I expressed above. Fortunately, it is the variable most easily influenced by healthy eating and exercise. The future health of our country undoubtedly depends on healthier eating. That means you must, in order to stay healthy, eliminate grains and sugars from your diet.

Energy psychology tools like Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) can be enormously helpful in kicking the sugar habit. We have been using EFT to successfully treat emotional stresses, including food cravings, such as those related to sugar for some time. I have an EFT DVD series (also available in VHS) that provides a total satisfaction guarantee.
