Breast Cancer's Reach Extends to Childhood

Breast cancer risks may stem from early growth patterns. Moreover, factors reaching as far back as a girl's birth weight may prove to have some influence on whether or not she will develop breast cancer.

With limited explanations from genetics, researchers attempted to locate the source of the growing number of breast cancer patients within the last 50 years.

During their study, researchers followed more than 117,000 girls between 1930 and 1975. The goal was to discover if growth patterns early in life manipulated breast cancer risks in adulthood. According to their study, researchers found a number of risk factors linked to breast cancer:

  • High birth weight
  • Rapid growth during the time of mammary-gland development
  • Rapid increase in height during puberty (age 8-14)
  • Low body mass index at age 14

However, the one factor researchers found to be a major link to breast cancer risks was diet and nutrition. This was because both seemed to be connected to rapid growth during adolescence. Also, girls whose breasts grew faster seemed to be exposed to higher concentrations of growth hormones, which are supplied through foods eaten.

These findings have motivated experts to encourage healthy eating habits and exercise, as ways to reduce breast cancer risks. Experts also stressed the importance of teaching children to adopt healthy behaviors with hope that they will carry these behaviors into their adulthood.

The bottom line: Eat nutritious meals and get plenty of exercise if you want to reduce your risk of breast cancer.

For starters, following the plan detailed in my Total Health Program will optimize your weight and familiarize you with the foods that ward off diseases.

Additional guidelines to reduce breast cancer risks:

One of the newest things that I have learned to lower the risk of breast cancer is that you can improve the ability of your body to metabolize estrogen. It is well documented that excessive estrogen will increase the risk of breast cancer. One can actually measure the ratio of estrogen metabolites to determine how effectively a person is able to remove estrogen from their system. However, if the estrogen metabolite ratio is compromised there are several effective nutritional solutions to improve it.

  • Consume omega-3 fats from cod liver and fish oil.

  • Consume flax seeds (organic only) that have been freshly ground in a coffee grinder. The water soluble fibers (lignans) are a simple nutritious solution to decrease the risk of breast cancer and nicely complement your omega-3 fats.

  • Eat broccoli sprouts. The sprouts are loaded with chemicals like indole-3 carbinol which is another effective way to speed up estrogen metabolism. If your schedule does not allow you to grow the sprouts you can purchase them or actually go to the health food store and purchase supplements like indole-3 carbinol. The major preference though is to use the whole food like the broccoli sprouts. In the near future I will be reviewing effective automated solutions for sprouting.

Exercise is another way to lower your insulin levels and breast cancer risk. You can learn more about incorporating the right exercise program into your life by reading Paul Chek's newest book, How to Eat, Move and Be Healthy!, a perfect complement to my nutritional plan.
