This USA Today article covers the current controversy over raw milk. Proponents say that it is healthier and has more flavor. The FDA, however, disagrees, arguing that raw milk is dangerous and can carry deadly pathogens such as campolybacter, salmonella and E. coli.
"Micro" Dairies
Some small farms are selling shares of their cows to consumers looking for raw milk for their families. Now, the state has taken notice of these raw milk "micro" dairies, saying they need to be licensed with the state Department of Agriculture. The order has some operators wondering whether the state has a right to regulate what many consider a private operation.
Legality and Licensing
Raw milk can be legally sold for human consumption in 28 states. Five additional states allow raw milk for animal consumption, and in a few more, raw milk is available through cow-share programs.
Some states require that farms that sell raw milk must be licensed through the state, which entails monthly testing of the milk and inspection of the farm and milk bottling room.
No one has died from drinking raw milk; over the past two years, perhaps fourteen people have become ill from drinking it.
