The 2006 News Stories You May NOT Have Heard

News Stories

To help air some of the largely unheard of (yet highly interesting) news that fell through the cracks in 2006, a Tampa Tribune reporter has scoured dozens of major news outlets and compiled 50 new discoveries that occurred in 2006.

Here are a few from the list (click on the link below to see it in its entirety):

  • In 2005, U.S. life expectancy reached a record high of nearly 78 years.
  • The part of the brain that regulates reasoning, impulse control and judgment doesn't really mature until about age 25.
  • The U.S. government has paid $1.5 billion in benefits to sick nuclear-weapons workers since 2001.
  • Brain chemicals in your tears are natural pain relievers.
  • The very first Americans may have come to the continent following an ocean highway made of dense kelp.

It is a difficult job to keep current with the news. We seem to be getting more and more of everything faster and faster. I go through about 4,000 articles every week and pick the best ones to put in the newsletter, but I missed many of these interesting stories.

The mainstream media coverage does not always give you the best picture of what's happening in the world. A number of these little-known stories may have profound medical implications.

Some echo what I have been saying for years, such as the fact that sleeping in on the weekend can disturb your body clock, and a light-sensitive protein in the eye is what resets the body's "internal clock."

On the other hand, I did not previously know that 30 minutes of continuous kissing can diminish your body's allergic reaction to pollen.

On Vital Votes, Suzanne from Walled Lake, Michigan says:

"The media tends to give you 1% truth and the rest is 'untruths'.  People live in cocoons believing they are well informed (listening to the 5 pm news) while tending to the day to day rigors of living.  Busy lives also keep people distracted from the desire to even know what is going on.

"I used to believe that if it didn't touch my life I didn't need to know about it (why bother).  So many people live that way.  I began doing research on the internet and my eyes were wide open in disbelief (it didn't take either ).

Now I find it hard to hold a conversation with the 'cocoon' type people.  You can tell after a few sentences that they 'just don't get it' and further communication with them is going to be frustrating on your part so you got to 'let it go'.

"I don't try to convert people to my way of thinking put merely point out that before they commit themselves to the belief of a certain issue, to maybe look at all the facts, evidence, documents and so on and go from there."
