The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Bayer Schering Pharma AG's drug YAZ, which is already used as an oral contraceptive, as a means of treating moderate acne in women who use the drug.
YAZ is the first oral contraceptive approved for three different uses. In addition to contraception and acne control, it is approved to treat the symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder.
YAZ contains ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone, and it is taken once a day for 24 days followed by four days on placebos to induce menstruation. Most oral contraceptives are taken for 21 consecutive days, followed by seven days of placebos.
