I have a 23-yr old autistic son who has multiple chemical sensitivities and is so sensitive to fluoride that he cannot take a 3-minute shower without quickly developing a horrific headache. We are stuck with Seattle's fluoridated water and spend tons of time and money providing him with fluoride-free drinking, cooking and bathing water.
I believe there are others with autism that are also sensitive to fluoride (because most have sensitivities to chemicals), but many parents don't know it. It took me 14 years to figure out my son got headaches from drinking fluoride and another 9 years to discover he can't even tolerate a 1ppm fluoride shower. I had thought that such a tiny amount couldn't possibly affect him negatively. He didn't used to have such terrible headaches when he was younger---his chemical sensitivities have gotten progressively worse. My son can only talk/respond a little and he has so many chemical reactions to hundreds of other substances that it can be difficult to sort out a chronic culprit like fluoride, but it's worth the effort.
I hope other parent's have figured out that, for an autistic person that talks very little, you should always consider that pain can cause negative behavior and chemicals, including fluoride in the tap water, can make an child's autistic symptoms increase...dramatically. In addition to headaches, fluoridated baths have also caused my son insomnia, with rapid heartbeat, pounding legs and screaming/yelling til 1-2am. I didn't know it was his bath back then.
I am so very thankful to Dr. Mercola for continually bringing up this extremely important topic. It is our duty---everyone one of us---to stop this poisoning of our nation's children, to inform our legislators, to demand unpoisoned water from our water utilities and to stop pretending that water fluoridation is someone else's problem. When our government systematically damages our children---with vaccines or fluoride---we all pay...some just pay more.

Sorry to hear of your son's problems. Is there any way that an in house water filter could be installed to purify your water?
Catryna_203, A Reverse Osmosis filter is designed to remove Fluoride.
I installed one about 35 years ago and you can really taste the difference between 'street water' and the water from the R.O. tap. At the time it was not practical for the home owner to use an R. O. system for showers or washing dishes, but only for ice and fresh drinking water, but it may be that things have changed and whole house systems are affordable now.
I'm also on the autism spectrum and am highly sensitive to fluoride. The dentists don't believe it when I tell them that after fluoride treatments I would get terribly ill (vomiting and dizziness and headaches.) In college my ever criticized mercolaisque English prof gave us an article on the dangers of fluoride and I was amazed that all this time my body was showing it and yet no one would believe it!! Now that I have children they use non fluoridated tooth paste and well water. My ped prescribed them fluoride supplements but of course I don't give it to them! It amazes me that doctors go along with this and won't take the time to read the research.
BTW, you might be interested in a friend of mine's videos. She is pretty much non verbal but she can communicate through the computer.

Many different kinds of RO filters are now available- including ones for the shower!
They are not cheap yet - but I believe the comparative price will drop as the demand increases.

Reverend Alan:
Where did you purchase the Reverse Osmosis? At a store? What is the company's name that makes Reverse Osmosis? I could only find it on the internet through some other company that sells it. I would like to purchase it from a store so I could talk to a person. I am not sure I could install it on my own.
Thanks for any help in this area!
what is the source of this information "This election day 53 cities rejected fluoridation."????
I have a 13 year old boy with autism. Me and a group of friends tried to get flouride out of our small towns drinking water and had the city council convinced until our story got in the paper. Many local dentists in the area insisted that flouride remain in the water. One month later, there was a bill passed to flouridate the whole state of Louisiana, even though many, including myself called all of the house representitives to complain, to no avail. What else can one do to change things?
I'm glad to see that Mercola.com is providing information on the dangers of fluoride. However, there's one thing that REALLY bugs me. They always talk about the fluoride in water, but I NEVER SEE ANY MENTION OF THE FLUORIDE IN TOOTHPASTE, AND THIS IS PROBABLY THE BIGGEST SOURCE OF IT FOR ANYONE WHO BRUSHES THEIR TEETH WITH CONVENTIONAL TOOTHPASTE! Have you ever noticed there are actually poison warnings on toothpaste? Check it out. Why does Mercola.com fail to ever mention this most obvious source of fluoride? :o(
I would imagine that it's because of the fact that while one can CHOOSE the toothpaste they buy, and whether or not it contains fluoride, one can not choose whether or not their public water supplies have fluoride added to them. Although someone above stated that several cities rejected fluoridating of their water...I don't remember the last time it was even up for a vote where I live! Mostly, people I talk to think I'm crazy to want a filtering system that removes fluoride from my drinking water, and actually seek out filters that preserve it for them!
Hello kurlikew, Dr. Mercola has 112 articles mentioning fluoride in toothpaste.

Thank you for posting some of the truth about fluoride.
The government mandates that toxic chemicals such as Lye be added to our drinking water supply to make the water about 7.0 PH. They don't do this for our health, they do it so the pipes won't clog up or corrode.
Reverse Osmosis removes flouride however Distilled and RO water should never be consumed because these processes removes all of the minerals from the water. When you remove the minerals, the water becomes acidic aggressively soaks up minerals from your body and can cause all sorts of problems.
The Ionization process is the very best way to make healthy drinking water. After filtering the water passes over positive and negative electrically charged plates which split the water by attracting the Ions with the opposite charge.
Since flouride, chlorine, lye, pharmaceuticals Etc. are always a positive charge, they are attracted to the Negatively charged plate and are separated along with the acidic part of the water. This leaves clean alkaline, antioxidant, hexagonal drinking water that will help keep your body alkaline and healthy.
Whole Life Water is the best Ionized water on the planet because of the quality of the Ionizing device that processes the water. In Japan this device is used in hospitals to treat the cause of many diseases and is one of the reasons that the Japanese people are the #1 healthiest, longest lived people on earth.
To remain disease free your body must be slightly alkaline and the blood must maintain approximately 7.35 PH +- or you will die. I am convinced that our epidemic of diabetes, cancer and many other diseases is due to the consumption of bottled water that is acidic along with our diet of over processed acid producing convenience food.
Our bodies are roughly 75 to 80% water and our brains are about 90% water. For your health and long life choosing the right water to drink is the most important health decision you will ever make.
David VanOsdol: Reverse Osmosis removes flouride however Distilled and RO water should never be consumed because these processes removes all of the minerals from the water. When you remove the minerals, the water becomes acidic aggressively soaks up minerals from your body and can cause all sorts of problems.
ALAN: The instructions for the installation of my R.O. system clearly stated that since the system removed all of the good minerals along with all the bad chemicals and pollutents, [it removes EVERYTHING except h20], that one should take daily a high quality mineral tablet. No big deal at all. I would do that anyway, R.O. water or not.
Coffee is a much bigger problem with acidifying the body then bottled water ever could be. Simply putting a slice of lemon in a glass of R.O. water makes it alkline enough to keep your body in good pH balance.
That's why we use distilled water with pinch of sea salt in each gallon for our household water. We also take vitamins and minerals. Distilled water is not a health danger once it is remineralized, and studies suggest that once the water contacts food in the stomach, it is remineralized anyway.
David, reverse osmosis (as far as I know) only makes about 20% of the water available - the rest is wasted, unless you find a way to pipe it out to the garden. If you don't have a garden, then it goes down the drain.
A little chemistry lesson for you folks from someone who has worked as an Environmental Lab Tech:
Water is naturally acidic. A pH of 7.0 is considered "neutral", meaning it's neither acidic or alkaline. Putting a slice of lemon in a glass of water that came out of a reverse osmosis system WILL NOT make it alkaline -- lemons contain citric acid, so that would just make the water even more acidic. The rain water around here (in central Missouri) has a pH of about 5.3 to 5.5, on average.
