Zinc Can Cure Diarrhea

child, sick, illZinc supplements reduce both the severity and duration of acute or persistent diarrhea in children, according to researchers from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.

The study included data from 22 studies, including 16 that focused on children with acute diarrhea, and six that focused on children with persistent diarrhea.

Compared to placebo, the zinc supplements reduced the occurrence of both types of diarrhea by about 18 percent. The supplements also reduce stool frequency by about 19 percent in children with acute diarrhea, and 13 percent in those with persistent diarrhea.

However, most of the studies also found that zinc supplements were more likely to cause vomiting than placebo.

Zinc is an essential trace mineral, and there are more biological roles for zinc than for all other trace elements put together. It plays a crucial role in such things as:
  • Cell growth
  • Keeping your immune system strong
  • Stabilizing your metabolic rate
  • Balancing your blood sugar
  • Maintaining your sense of taste and smell
It’s well known that one of the symptoms of zinc deficiency is an increased risk of bacterial and viral infections, so it makes sense that boosting your immune system with zinc would also help to ward off diarrhea.

This could be a simple, and inexpensive, way to save the lives of millions of children who die from diarrhea worldwide every year. Another, perhaps even safer, option for treating diarrhea is to take a high-quality probiotic (good bacteria) -- and I advise everyone take probiotics with them when they travel overseas for this very reason.

Should YOU Take a Zinc Supplement?

Reading about all of zinc’s benefits, you may be wondering whether it’s a good idea to take a supplement, just in case. Well, about the only time you may want to consider one would be if you come down with a cold, as zinc lozenges (that you suck on, and don’t just swallow) may help to relieve your symptoms.

However, while zinc is an essential component of human nutrition and deficiency can result in some devastating symptoms, it is important to avoid the conventional paradigm approach to nutrients -- and that is often targeting a specific nutrient for a specific disease.

In reality, nothing is isolated in your body, and taking zinc indiscriminately can be quite problematic. For instance, zinc supplementation may:
So my personal recommendation would be to hold off on the zinc supplements, and instead increase zinc in your diet from the foods you eat. Some of the best food sources of zinc are:
  • Liver
  • Crimini mushrooms
  • Spinach
  • Sea vegetables
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Beef
  • Green peas
And remember, you are unique in which foods -- and which vitamins and minerals -- make you thrive. So you can further tailor which zinc-rich foods are right for you by finding out your nutritional type.

Zinc deficiencies are another common deficiency in our society.  Perhaps the diarrhea would have been less likely to happen in the first place if nutritional and sanitation habits would have been better in the first place.

Corks work well also for diarrhea---Oops, did I really say that?  Just one of those funky days folks..Sorry.

Who needs corks, this interfere's with Proctor & Gambles infant, child, and adult, diaper business revenue!

Besides, diarrhea is a GOOD thing, yep, you heard it, actually from Proctor & Gamble, first; with ANAL LEAKAGE warning labels for food, from hydrolyzed mineral oil, branded OLEAN(TM), also known as Olestra, the failed fake fat.

By the way, the failed fake fat cost over one billion dollars in write-offs for P&G stockholders.

LOL at Dr Fox and Russ...Uhm...instead of finding a so-called cure for dire-rear (what my son called it when he was little) - why don't they find the root cause eliminate it? (no pun - er - intended) The root cause of "illness" is adaptive physiology to either a toxin the body is trying to address or a deficiency in some critical nutrient. If zinc works, maybe there was a zinc deficiency, but more important is what in the environment is causing the zinc deficiency is there anything we can do to change that...Like maybe getting soil back to nutrient levels of 100 or 200 years ago.

A first defense against diarrhea should be lots of a good probiotic, however in the past i have also used ANGOSTURA BITTERS with extremely great results, a few tablespoons with a dash of water every hour, 2 to 3 times, works like a charm....Don't eat or drink anything else during that time....

Aren't most US soils depleted of zinc? If it isn't added to the soil, how can plants and animals absorb what isn't there? And what kind of beef? Grain fed beef which is high in omega 6, or beef rich in omega 3's because it is raised on grass out in the field? And why were oysters not on the list? Most other lists have oysters as the best source of zinc.

If your food comes from truly organic farms, that is they make their own compost, and put everything back into the soil, etc., then there will be minerals in the plants. As for beef, it surprises me you should ask that if you read articles on this site regularly: it's grass-fed beef every time! Grain-fed is too high in omega 6, for a start. Oysters: Dr Mercola recommends banning all shellfish from our diet. Use the search engine in this site for questions, you pick up a lot of information that way.

Article says "It is unknown, however, exactly how zinc produces its anti-diarrheal effects".
I bet if it was a drug they would have poured millions into useless studies, but Zinc being a natural substance, like other natural products, they can't patent it, so not much money here, you definately won't find them.
As with anything else to much of a good thing is really worse for you, so exercise caution with Zinc, if you take to much you can become quite nauseous, believe me, i know from personal experience.

As I understand it copper and zinc need to be in balance. Increasing copper decreases zinc. Increase zinc and that decreases copper. It is so much better to get vitamins and minerals from just eating real food grown in soils that are not depleted.

Yes doc, as always you're right on the money, it's to get our supplies from whole natural foods, however most of our soils are so depleted and polluted we sometimes have to rely on supplementation to get our "fix", same as with Fish and fish oil, better to eat fish but just waay to much contaminants in fish so we gotta go the supplementation route
and i wish we did'nt have this nagging problem we're having with our posts today !!!!!!!

Agreed, but, where is that undepleted soil?

When I was a kid, my grandparents had a garden - several acres most summers. Took me a lot of years after all the pea picking summers to eat purple hull peas again. Granny would lock us out of the house in the morning until lunchtime & then again after lunch. We roamed the woods, climbed the fig trees, caught mudbugs for dinner, went fishing, re-enacted war scenes with Barbie/GIJoe/M60s, hunted snakes, played cops & robbers, harassed the livestock, and if we got the munchies, we went out to the garden & picked something to eat like a carrot or if it was the right season a melon or berries or figs. We knocked the dirt off & munched down. There were no pesticides & we were not savvy enough about gardening in the earlier years to know manure was used as fertilizer...but we did know that tomatoes were in a different spot every year and every year there were areas without anything planted. Most of what we ate every summer was grown by them or hunted by them. Granny rarely went to the grocery store. It was a real treat for us when she did 'cause we were city kids & there was only so much country we could take before we were fighting. I digress....

Every kid should spend summers on a farm. I sure miss my granny. She would have been 87 this month.

Foxtroter:

No truer words have ever been written, or spoken.  We as people need to be more proactive concerning our health.  We need to read research get a first hand understanding for our selves and not take the words of others not for something so important as our health.  Our lives.

nldavis, what a great point you make! Locked out of the house? As kids, I don't recall being locked out, but we were SENT outside to play, even on the coldest winter day. And in summer we stayed out till the streetlights came on. Most of the time our parents had no idea where we were.

"Quality time"? I think that must have been what our parents called the time after all us kids were in bed at night! Parents did grown-up things and kids did childish things. No adults supervised our baseball games or any other aspect of our after-school and summer lives. We got in trouble, we learned from our mistakes, we rolled in the dirt and ate green tomatoes and raw corn-on-the-cob and were incredibly healthy. Are those days gone forever?

Zicam is a patented zinc product so patenting difficulty is not always a motivation.

I agree with this article about zinc therapy. The studies in Africa, dealing wih the children and diarrheal diseases, is most favorable. It is a known fact that most of the deaths in these areas are not due to the host disease, but rather its symptoms, if you will. Diarrhea kills more children, and adults alike, than the disease in and of itself. The work being done by teams of public health workers from USAID have shown this to be true. Zinc IS and will become over time a most welcome tool in dealing with diarrheal diseases.

So instead of marketing a new vaccine, which just happens to increase death from pneumonia, why not take some zinc?

Oh ya, the pharmas' can't make a huge profit of it.......................
