Researchers have provided evidence that misfolded proteins that clump together in the brain and cause damage that leads to Parkinson's disease symptoms may start off in your gut, then travel to your brain via the vagus nerve. In mice with a severed vagus nerve, misfolded proteins did not reach the brain - and they didn't have behavioral changes often seen with the disease.
