It is very clear that the placebo effect is real. Last year this was well documented in one of the most prestigious journals in the world Science.
Most doctors only superficially acknowledge the power of placebo and do not even begin to fully utilize the power that it represents.
Our subconscious minds are basically neutral. They will implement just about any command that you continuously feed it and sincerely believe in. If you believe that life is miserable and you are terrible and a failure and woo is you, then you subconscious will obediently and consistently help you manifest that in your life.
If you sincerely believe that a placebo, or for that matter an antidepressant, or St. Jon's wort is going to resolve your depression than it will.

However, if you have a serious problem you will certainly want to seek treatment from someone who is trained in this area. Gary Craig, the developer of EFT, maintains a list of practitioners that is a good starting place. Later this year I hope to have a certified list that will be even better as the individuals will have a rating by people who have previously seen them. In the meantime though Gary's list is a good start.
