Amazon.com has created a digital archive, known as Search
Inside the Book, unlike any other available--it contains more
than 33 million pages from 120,000 books, and every page is
searchable and viewable. The creators set out to create an
archive where books could be as easily searched and utilized
as the Internet, as finding information in books tends to
be more cumbersome and time-consuming than Web-based information.
The archive, which Amazon hopes to expand to include most
of its titles (a number in the multimillions), allows users
to discover books that they likely wouldn’t have access
to otherwise. Its purpose is to sell more books, however,
not to allow users to read books for free online. Each person
won't be able to view more than a few thousand pages per month,
or more than 20 percent of any single book.
