Poor
childhood brushing and flossing habits are wearing thin both on
teeth and as an excuse for adults with bad teeth. A study involving
300 people revealed that the correlation between family history
and future teeth and gum problems became less of an issue as they
grew older.
Smoking, poor social circumstances, infrequency of dental visits
and lack of tooth brushing were all cited as the main contributors
to tooth loss and decay.
Research showed that smoking caused tooth loss and decay by the
way it hindered blood flow to the gums.
Based on these findings experts recommend that people take a proactive
approach to teeth care and maintain healthy brushing and flossing
habits as a preventative measure to tooth and gum diseases. Another
part of their recommendation included quitting smoking.
The findings also confirmed the importance of continuing good teeth
care habits well after moving out of the home in order to maintain
a healthy set of teeth and positive self-image while entering the
golden years.
