Some 30 "bloggers"--people who share their thoughts on
a myriad of subjects every day on the Internet--recently attended
the Democratic National Convention in Boston. An additional 10 to
20 will join various media mavens later this month at the Republican
Convention in New York at Madison Square Garden.
According to a Republican spokesperson, his party believes bloggers
are a growing community who will affect how the media landscape
evolves over time, just like the advent of 24-hour cable news channels
and the emergence of politically-charged talk radio nationwide.
Although the spokesperson didn't divulge who or how many bloggers
were invited to the Republican Convention, just as they handle traditional
media, the potential list includes people who express a mix of ideologies
and are generally believed to be moderate in tone. Convention planners
have also set aside a "corner" at the Republican Convention,
similar to a space at the Democratic Convention, for bloggers to
work.
Bloggers will have the same access as traditional media outlets,
according to the GOP invitation. To avoid being deluged with requests,
Republican staffers chose to invite a select few.
