Concerns have heightened over the potential of a tuberculosis (TB)
outbreak after studies revealed that the spreading of multi-drug
resistance TB could become a common occurrence. The only cure for
this type of TB is a specific combination of drugs that need to
be taken for the course of several months while the patient is closely
monitored.
If the TB findings from the reports prove correct, it could mean
a rise from its dormancy state and then the possibility of it reaching
epidemic proportions. Worse yet, it is believed that TB now carries
new strains, which make it more difficult to fight than the older
ones.
Cases of TB have heavily struck Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia.
TB strains resistant to antibiotics have surfaced predominantly
in the following countries: Russia, Eastern Europe, South Africa,
China and Israel.
TB Facts
- A disease that is spread by airborne bacteria that settles in
the lungs and results in long-term infections
- Each year 8.7 million people are infected by TB
- TB causes 2 million deaths a year
- AIDS cases and the breaking down of immune systems were responsible
for the resurgence of TB in Europe and North America in the 1990s
Researchers stressed the importance of finding control methods
for people with multi-drug-resistant disease as part of the strategies
to control tuberculosis.
