Many people feel that getting sick is not a viable enough excuse
to miss work; however, those who struggle into the office when they
are ill may be risking their lives. Even working with a common cold
can be harmful to one's health. By going into work "under the
weather," one is:
- Spreading germs around the office
- Hastening their own deaths
In a 10-year study of 10,000 civil servants, findings indicated
30 percent to 40 percent of people who did not take time off work
to get well had double the incidences of coronary disease. Researchers
believe this is directly associated with the increased stress that
results from working when ill, a finding that corresponds with previous
research. Further, people who have jobs that involve long hours
feel obligated to shrug off feelings of illness, as promotion is
often linked to how much time is spent working.
Contrary to the findings, critics argue that linking stress and
heart disease to work is a mistake. A spokesman of the Institute
of Directors explains, "It is the illness which ultimately
causes the increased risk. You could be putting yourself at risk
by doing many things when ill, for example looking after your children."
