The Power of Prayer Across Generations

Posted By Dr. Mercola | October 24 2006 | 2,509 views

This first-person account describes how a prayer passed down through family generations brings comfort and joy even in the saddest of times.

The writer overheard the end of an emotional conversation between a mother and daughter in an airport, wherein both wished the other "enough." After the daughter left, the writer approached the mother, asking what wishing you "enough" meant.

The mother's answer was a prayer handed down from her parents to be shared with loved ones. In the form of a blessing, the prayer urges that other person to enjoy a life filled with "just enough good things to sustain them":

I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright no matter how gray the day may appear.

I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun even more.

I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive and everlasting.

I wish you enough pain so that even the smallest of joys in life may appear bigger.

I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.

I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.

I wish you enough hellos to get you through the final good-bye.

Dr. Mercola's Comments:

Although there are certainly some skeptics out there I strongly believe that there is no question that prayer works. We have many studies now to document that. The science is very solid in excellent peer-reviewed publications. The science is so solid that it is criminally negligent for physicians not to recommend it.

Dr. Larry Dossey is probably the leading expert in the United States or world on the topic of prayer and has written many books on it. If you have an interest in this area you may be interested in an article of his I have previously posted, which appeared in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

Evidence shows that the most powerful form of prayer is often when people pray for themselves, rather than for others. Praying for others may not be as powerful because the person for whom you're praying may not be able to overcome their often negative belief systems. But of course, that definitely wasn't the case in the story linked above.

For those that might have problems with the spiritual elements of prayer it might be helpful to view the film "The Secret," which provides many effective illustrations of how whatever you put your intention and thoughts on you tend to manifest in your life.

It is a very real process and I can cite hundreds of illustrations of this happening in my own life.

The key here though is to realize that it is a two-way street.

You can just as easily manifest negative things in your life as you can positive. So it is vital to use whatever tools necessary to cancel the negative thoughts you have. It is nearly always unwise to ever say anything negative about yourself in the present or future tense as you will tend to cause more of that to happen in your life.
