Troy Dayton was first prescribed Wellbutrin 2 1/2 years ago, to help him quit smoking. But, long after he quit, he continues to take the antidepressant, because even though he was never depressed, it makes him feel happier.
Psychiatrists warn that the use of Wellbutrin and similar drugs in this manner could be dangerous; little is known about their long-term effects. They might, for example, eventually trigger manic-depressive illness.
Dayton, who also occasionally takes the drug Ecstasy for much the same reason, believes that happiness should be celebrated, not questioned, whatever the ultimate cause of it may be, so long as it doesn't hurt anyone else.
