The Price Scientists Pay For Even Questioning Darwinism

expelled, ben stein, movie, intelligence, intelligent design, creation, creationism, darwin, darwinism, evolutionIs the scientific establishment unfairly punishing scientists who dare to oppose the theory of evolution; who dare discuss the evidence pointing toward intelligent design in the human DNA and the evolution of man?

Are proponents of Intelligent Design being blacklisted, either subtly or overtly? Has open-mindedness been effectively banned?

These are the questions raised by the movie “Expelled”, narrated by Ben Stein.

Take a look at the trailer for the movie at the site linked below.

Dr. MercolaDr. Mercola's Comments:

This is a timely film, if you ask me, considering the fact that freedom of both thought and speech in many areas, such as politics, science, medicine and the general media is being eroded in the United States, keeping pace with the speed of everything else in modern life, it would seem.

And boy, is this a touchy subject!

The controversy around Ben Stein’s upcoming movie EXPELLED: No Intelligence Allowed, has the blogosphere seething with a mixture of cheerleading chants, frothy ridicule, and what appears to be sheer angst.

In this film, Ben Stein travels the world on a quest to expose the truth -- that it has become a punishable crime to believe there might be evidence of “design” in nature, and that perhaps life is not just the result of accidental, random chance.

On his website, the following mock Welcome Speech by Charles Darwin invites teachers and students everywhere to ignore the truth in the name of science:

And this year, we are proud to report that in every subject but Science, students and faculty are free to challenge ideas, and seek truth wherever it may lead.

But Science is different. In Science, there is no room for dissent, for dissent is dangerous. That is why we at Big Science simply refuse to allow it. Like dancing, “dissent” can lead to other things.

As Class President Richard Dawkins put it so well: “Shut up!”

As you know…last year we had the misfortune of “presupposition of design” rearing its ugly head, with several students challenging Neo-Darwinian materialism, and arguing incessantly for the right to examine Intelligent Design.

They were all Expelled, of course – but still: it just goes to show where academic freedom can lead, if not shut down immediately!

Sincerely,

Charles Darwin
Principal, President, Admissions and Diversity Affairs Officer,
Big Science Academy “No Intelligence Allowed”

Richard Dawkins, ethologist, evolutionary biologist, outspoken atheist and author of such books as The Selfish Gene and The God Delusion, has already jumped into the fray.

He managed to crash a pre-screening of the film, which immediately became the talk of rabid bloggers and conservative media outlets alike. The New York Times even ran a full article headlined, “No Admission for Evolutionary Biologist at Creationist Film.”

My question is merely this: What are you afraid of?

What do you fear might happen if research starts pointing in a new direction, or even multiple directions? What might you lose?

Do you fear the idea that your thoughts are powerful enough to influence your health and your life? What would that mean for you? What would happen to you if you were no longer able to blame anything or anyone else, for anything?

How would your life change if there was proof that intelligent design encoded your DNA, and gave you the free will to turn those genes on and off as you please – through the use of your thoughts and emotions?

Run For Cover – Things May Not Be as They Appear

There’s no doubt the pressure to “just shut up,” is happening all throughout the political, scientific and medical arenas.

Just take a look at these prominent politicians, researchers, scientists, biologists and medical professionals who have paid for their unpopular findings with their reputation and careers:

  1. Dr. Ryke Geerd Hamer – Incarcerated for refusing to disavow his medical findings that your emotions create disease, despite overwhelming clinical documentation offering verifiable proof that his position is valid.
  1. Dr. Bruce Lipton – whose revolutionary and wildly unpopular discoveries include the complete renunciation of genetic predisposition as being the cause of disease, because your DNA are regulated – switched on or off -- by your thoughts and emotions.
  1. Dr. David Graham – FDA Associate Director for Science and Medicine in the Office of Drug Safety, who blew the whistle and revealed how the FDA covered up the real dangers of Vioxx. His reward? Removal from his post as drug reviewer.
  1. Dr. Eric Topol -- a cardiologist with the prestigious Cleveland Clinic Foundation, who became one of the most outspoken critics of drug companies, was demoted from his position as head of the clinic’s medical college.
  1. Senator Dr. Ron Paul – the 2nd Republican Presidential Candidate in the 2008 elections, who wants to abolish the IRS, reduce the size and influence of the American government, and bring back the Constitution -- although you wouldn’t know he’s still in the race, pitted against John McCain, based on his non-existent media coverage!

This Washington Post web page titled: “Full Coverage of the 2008 Candidates” has gone so far as omitting Ron Paul entirely, listing only McCain on the Republican side of the fence… Confusing, isn’t it?

I could go on and on, but I think you get the picture.

There are things happening; there’s new knowledge; there’s truth out there that you’re not being told. In some cases you’re not even given the opportunity to review it and ponder over it for yourself.

THAT is the path of mass ignorance, which is far more dangerous than that of potentially unraveling the science some folks have dedicated their careers to validate.

If you want to take a peek at what’s behind curtain number two, EXPELLED is being released in theaters on April 18, 2008.

I, for one, will continue to do my part: sharing with you all the latest findings on how to create Total Health by bringing you fascinating, groundbreaking – and at times earth shattering -- insights from renowned experts in the fields of natural health, medicine, science and biology through my Inner Circle

Open your mind. It’s fascinating out here.

Evolutionists AND ID/Creationist crowd,

First...may I suggest EFT for all of you? The nonsensical rants, non sequiturs and ad hominems are truly sad to behold. Did any of you even read the Doc's post? Have you even see the movie? You're fulminating about something you know nothing about. Let's cut to the chase. The point of this forum is that people are being punished for questioning evolutionary/Darwinian orthodoxy..pro/con? Ever heard of thesis, antithesis and synthesis? Let's debate this issue and keep on subject PLEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Also, please keep in mind that Mr. Stein said that evolution very well may be true. He was simply disturbed by the exclusive tendencies of one side and the stiflement of apologetic discourse.

Finally, PunkDude, if Dr. Mercola is so repellent, why do you keep posting on this site? Who forced you to sign up?

I don't know what bothers me more, the arrogance or the ignorance (or the wretched grammar/spelling)! Religion has always dealt with the great questions of life. We call this philosophy. Science grew out of philosophy, and they split into two fields. The scientific method grew out of Christianity.

It would be quite a shock to Copernicus, Kepler, Paschal, et al, that a belief in a Creator God and Science are incompatible. The Father of Genetics was a Christian monk. The gentleman who discovered the ocean currents did so after reading in the Bible about the "paths of the sea".  In this same book, the earth is referred to as a "sphere hung in the heavens"(flat earth?!).

God-haters began to use Science as a weapon to destroy religion.  This is an abuse of Science which needs to be addressed.  All lovers of Truth, regardless of their personal beliefs, will speak and act responsibly, without resorting to demeaning rhetoric.  So you see, I already know which of you love Truth and which of you do not.

What many "God-Haters" are really out to destroy is religion. There is a huge difference between being anti-"God" and anti-religion. While I definitely believe in a Creator - an intelligent designer - I wholly reject religion, which nearly always seeks to define who that Creator is. Historically, many religions have formed from ulterior motives, primarily power, wealth, and/or control of the masses.

Therefore, the difference between "Intelligent Design" and "Creationism" is that the former concurs with the overwhelming scientific evidence of design, whereas, creationists go one step further and presume to define the creator. It is vital to understand this difference in order to have an intelligent discussion.

I don't begrudge anyone their religion and I believe that on some level and for many people it is necessary. However, not all anti-religious people are "God-Haters" and atheists. Some of us are Deists, which, by the way, is what most of our founding fathers were. We can have a very civil discussion, but the odds are better if we keep religion (not a Creator) out of it.

The scientific method did not grow out of Christianity.  Some scientific techniques did, but not the principle of science altogether, which had its start when the first being with a mind was able to put facts together and test them.  Who knows how long ago that was?  Also, cultures before Christianity were engaged in science--the Greeks, etc.--and though sometimes their science was tainted by superstition, often they had very clear ideas as to how science works, and even discounted the influence of gods, etc.  If you need to point to any historical evidence for the beginnings of science, take a look at those cultures.

An addendum to Mr. Sawyer. The Scientific Method as we know it today (Observe, Hypothesize, Experiment/Verify, Conclude) was formulated by Francis Bacon, a Franciscan monk. It goes without saying that as long as there have been inquiring minds, there has been Science.

My original comment was a response to the notion that religion and science are incompatible and that people of faith are ignorant.

The God (or Life) Haters have a method to their madness. Sir Charles Darwin was two men, One a biologist & One of the WEALTHIEST men of his day.

Darwin, at the zenith of his social strata and part of the program He and His fellow masters over us had for us was to create stress to cause the weaker among us to fail. This would suppress the masses, whom they feared. That is where "survival of the fittest" is promoted, yet Darwin did not form those words. They came from Herbert Spencer, an economist who created the theory of Social Darwinism.

To be fair to Darwin, Spencer's ideas of fall flat on the face of Darwin's observation of nature supporting organisms that cooperated for their mutual benefit. If organisms fight to the death, usually both die. Darwin knew this yet his contemporaries liked the ring of this as it justified them to fight for space at the top and keep others from reaching their strata. Twisting science to justify fascism.

One outcome of this top hat cigar chomping brainstorming was recruiting people to write and insert ideas into main stream thought to mold opinion. H.G. Wells was their instrument, despite the fact that Darwin was a Racist who thought so little of the Irish that I can't quote what Darwin said about Irishmen like Wells.

The Prussian Militarized Education system was promoted and relabeled by people friendly to their cause Like Dewey and today's American Public Education system with its "stressing elements" is what we enjoy. One of the reasons for this system was Coal barons & Industrialists needed workers who would stay put after money was spent training them.

The average man at that time was too bright to spend his whole life toiling on some assembly line, He would often quit after 6 months, take his earnings & buy an item for his homestead.

Intelligence means how well and how much you can reason with out being taught! Education means how “trainable you are” regardless of what you truly reason to be true or false!

Can anyone even see how baited you just were! Ha! Good Job, Dr. Mercola!

Exactly Dr Gussa and unfortunately it seems all you need to be a doctor these days is trainable - by the drug companies that is.

Intelligence is the ability to predict.

Given certain inputs, your ability to predict what is next.

Where is the ball going to be.

Is that animal chasing you down/dangerous.

The book On Intelligence explains this very well.

Anyone who has taken a MENSA test will recorgnize that the tests

give you a series of information/pictures and then asks you to PREDICT

the next one in the series, or IDENTIFY the pattern principle.

Education is supposed to be a process to developing more pattern

recognition and prediction...

But this article is about science/beliefs and punishment therein...

We need to STOP ALL THE CENSORSHIP!

The drug companies need to stop censoring the herb/vitamin companies,

and the solid studies that are being done.  The news media is deplorable

here.

We need to STOP the POLITICAL CORRECTNESS.

We need to COMMUNICATE and ACCEPT the communication for what it is.

I for one DO NOT BELIEVE That Dinasaur bones were put there by God to test my faith.  How silly.  I do not believe the Divine Creator created us in HIS IMAGE, because I think he would have MORE SELF-ESTEEM than that.

But who cares what I believe?  I don't!  Honestly, it is not the driving force for me getting out of bed every day.  It is what I believe, it has changed over the years, and GUESS WHAT, it will change again...

If you can accept that in yourself, it goes a long way to realizing it is true of any rational person about any given topic...

Love the feedback this is producing...

Kirk Out!

Yes, it looks like that after you have "survived" EDUCATION you can start to use your INTELLIGENCE based on your adult FREE WILL to seek, sort and use right INFORMATION for your own and others' well-being and happiness.

Oh my goodness. So many posts SOOO off point! I guess that this really is a needed discussion so we can see each others views and fears. So here's some of my background: I do not consider myself a Christian, though I do think of Jesus as a saviour to me. I also rely on the teachings of other powerful incarnations of the creator that have a history of helping people do the right thing, like Krsna, Durga, Milarepa, Chenzerig, etc. As a teenager I called myself an agnostic, but now I just try to be human.

That being said, I have always thought that science would one day work its way around to proving the existence of the divine. Science is our free will, and if we look in the mirror we should see that we are divine souls with an intelligent design. We should be using science to learn how to use our design intelligently, not belligerently.

How can you think that you have the power to heal yourself or anything/anyone else without the blessing of life, which is in itself divinity? I just don't see how you can read any of Dr Mercola's posts fully without recognizing that there is more here than meets the eye. Where does your love come from? (not that I see much evidence of love in these posts, but love is what it takes to heal, and that's what Mercola's site is generally about, right?)

It doesn't matter to me what other people believe as long as they don't try to force their beliefs on me.  I don't mind a good discussion, but I hate proselytizing.  It's great that all of you have different ideas, but please don't put each other down for it.
