  • Researchers from Johns Hopkins Medicine compiled data on diet, asthma symptoms and inhaler use, finding those whose diet was higher in omega-3 fat had a lower risk of severe asthma symptoms when exposed to air pollution
  • Indoor and outdoor air pollution are associated with a higher risk of lung disorders, including an increase in asthma symptoms. Pollution appeared to increase inflammation; a metabolic by-product of omega-6, leukotrienes, also increased inflammation in the lungs
  • Air pollution is also associated with premature death, poor sleep, cancer and high blood pressure. Consider protecting your indoor air quality by properly ventilating during hours when outdoor air pollution is lowest
  • Balance your omega-3 and omega-6 fat intake by reducing or eliminating processed foods, which are typically made with vegetable oils high in omega-6; increase your intake of fatty fish such as wild-caught Alaskan salmon, herring or mackerel, which are less likely to be contaminated, while steering clear of farmed fish and large fish such as marlin, swordfish and tuna

Boys have a slightly greater risk than girls. The cost of asthma in children aged 5 to 17 included 13.8 million days of school lost and a median cost of $983 per year. Children younger than 4 years were less likely to have asthma, but when they had an attack they were more likely to require emergency care.
