What Have They Done to Milk?

CBS News correspondent Andy Rooney shares his hilarious, yet very true, thoughts about what “milk” has become. Going to the store to pick up some milk presents you with an endless array of options -- strawberry milk, skim milk, milk to go, cereal bars with milk -- none of which resemble the old-fashioned, straight-from-the-farm variety where the cream naturally rises to the top of the bottle.

Gone are the simple glass bottles of fresh milk from healthy cows, only to be replaced with artificial concoctions that are pasteurized, homogenized and loaded with strange ingredients.

In just one bottle of half-and-half, Rooney shares the laundry list of ingredients: Nonfat milk, milk, corn syrup solids, artificial color, sugar, dipotassium phosphate, sodium citrate mono, and diglycerides, carrageenan, natural and artificial flavors, vitamin A palmitate.

And what about the notion that the milk in most supermarkets comes from a farm? Rooney investigated “Farmland Dairies” in New Jersey only to find that the “farm,” located at 520 Main Avenue, had no cows in sight.

Clearly, while fresh raw milk is an outstanding health food, the processed milk at your supermarket is anything but healthy. I couldn’t agree with Rooney more when he says, “My suggestion, if they want to sell more milk, is that they go back to selling what comes out of a cow.”

Bravo, Andy! He's nailed it again! I adore his comments on "half and half" - half what...and half what? And "fat-free" cream? There's your HFCS and sugar again! And artificial flavor? In cream? Nosir, I milked the family cow for years, skimmed the milk for butter-making and loved the taste of real cream.

I refuse to eat pretend food. I eat real butter, real mayo, real cream. The secret is portion control. Eat in moderation and you can enjoy all the good things that our Mother Nature provides.

Right on... they always replace fat with something that is bad for you, either sugar or chemicals, or both.

People should enjoy eating foods with real fat in them. It's healthy, it controls blood sugar and it makes you feel satiated.

I want to throw this question out to anybody who knows... I have no access to raw milk and have only tried it once in my life. It tasted ok , except that it was warm, so at the time, I wasn't crazy about it. I'm sure I would have felt differently if it was ice cold!
A Sunflower food store opened up by me last week and they sell non-homogenized milk in a half gallon bottle. It is pasturized, as they are not allowed to carry it if it is not. I bought a gallon (it was no more expensive than "organic" milk sold in a wax carton), and I loved it. You have to shake it up pretty good because the cream goes to the top. I normally use rice or almond milk, but this was such a treat to me. Other than the fact that it is pasturized, is there any advantage to drinking this  over rice, almond or even commercial organic milk (which I don't buy anymore, but I do like) ?
Thanks for any replies!

Soy "milk" is absolutely poison. Milk pasteurized but not homogenized is better for you than ultra-pasteurized organic. It has calcium and enough good fat to help you absorb it. Just remember to take cod-liver oil with it for vitamins D and A and omega -3 fats in an absorbable form.

Check your local natural food store/co-op.  The one near here sells non-homogenized (creamline) milk.  I don't think it's highly pasteurize because the majority of the health problems that I have had, including an odd rash that I have gotten on the inside of my elbows, disappeared.

Another good site is www.realmilk.org.  You can check the laws regarding raw milk in your state there.

Thanks for your answers! Katy B,  you are so right about soy! I don't touch that stuff....nasty!
nanciesweb and Free as a Bird, I am relieved to hear that the non-homogenized low pasteurized milk is ok. I really do enjoy a glass now and then and I didn't quite know what to make of my new "discovery"!. The fact that the milk comes in clear glass bottles and the cream separates, makes it appealing to me ...and it tastes so good! I do take black currant seed oil and flax seed, so I guess I'm ok in the fatty acids dept!
Again, thanks for the input!

You don't have to tell me twice! :-)  I have hypothyroidism (from birth -- no thyroid gland) and therefore try to stay clear of soy and all other goitrogens (even though I have no thyroid gland and therefore can never get a goiter, I don't want to take the chance that goitrogens might interfere with my thyroid meds).

I used to buy that kind of milk before I found raw. Contact your local chapter of the Weston Price Foundation. There are many raw milk farmers that don't want to be listed on the web site. They will help you find raw milk.

Yes , but what has the cow been fed? What vaccinations has it had? What drenches and sprays has it been exposed to? Is cows milk healthy anymore anyway?  Without getting into the organic debate, can we truely trust the milk that is so called simple milk? Is it really ok these days? Dom ox

Andy Rooney make a good point. I only wish he had gone farther to promote raw milk. At least he mentioned that at one time we actually had unhomogenized milk. And detailing the additives will perhaps turn on the light for some people who don't know any better. Slowly, slowly changes are a'coming.
