I have a question about calcium. I don't eat dairy and I am pregnant. I do eat beans and broccoli but how else can I get enough calcium into my diet? I am also concerned for my daughter as I don't let her have any dairy either. She's 4 years old
Follow the diet in Read This First on the home page at www.mercola.com and taking folic acid 1 mg three times a day is certainly reasonable unless you want to do green vegetable juicing which would be even better. I would also eat one ounce of dried seaweed per week divided up so you are eating four grams a day. Also, consume no coffee or alcohol. The central issue is calcium absorption. Vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption and must be taken from October to March if you live in northern latitudes. 400 units per day is generally sufficient. I would also suggest far more green leafy vegetables as there are other accessory nutrients that are in the vegetables that are not in calcium pills that lead to greater bone density. Also please review the article above on vegetable intake for strong bone development.
