More than half a million babies -- one in eight -- are currently born prematurely each year, a 30 percent increase over 1981 rates.
Doctors are being urged to avoid infertility treatments that result in multiple births, one possible cause of the increase. However, infertility treatments only account for a fraction of this growing problem. Doctors do not know the cause for most preterm births, nor how to predict or prevent them.
Being even a few weeks premature can increase the risk of health and developmental problems. Babies before 32 weeks of pregnancy are at greatest risk; about 20 percent do not survive a year, and many or the survivors suffer from long-term health problems such as cerebral palsy, learning disabilities, or asthma.
