75 Percent of the U.S. Population Will be Overweight by 2015

A research team at John Hopkins University has examined 20 different published studies and national surveys about weight and eating behavior. Their conclusion is far from encouraging.

Americans across all age groups, genders and races are getting fatter, and if the trend continues, 75 percent of U.S. adults will be overweight by the year 2015. Obesity is definitely becoming the norm.

They also found that an astounding 80 percent of african american women over the age of 40 are currently overweight, with 50 percent falling in the obese category, putting them at great risk for heart disease, diabetes and various cancers.

Dr. Mercola''s Comments Dr. Mercola's Comments:

This may actually be optimistic. At least one study predicted that 90 percent of men and 70 percent of women will eventually become overweight. I find it very difficult to agree with that, but it is definitely true that, as a result of the obesity epidemic, the average American lifespan is falling like a rock and could drop even more in coming decades. In fact, by the middle of this century, the increased risk of obesity-caused diabetes, heart disease and cancer could lower the average life expectancy of 77.6 years by as much as five years.

That's certainly a far cry from the 2002 Social Security Administration forecast that projected the maximum human life span to reach 100 in roughly six decades. If this epidemic is not reversed we will, for the first time in history, see children living shorter lives than their parents.

And their quality of life may be worse as well. In addition to the diseases they will suffer, they may also need to spend more of their money on their illnesses; medical expenditures for morbidly obese adults in the year 2000 were 81 percent more than for normal-weight adults. The high price tag for health care costs for morbidly obese adults is also weighing heavily on U.S. health care system. In that same year, the U.S. health care budget that needed to treat those with excess body weight shot up to over $11 billion.

I have dedicated a large portion of my life to reversing this deadly trend, by providing you with the tools you need to fight obesity in your own home. Simple lifestyle changes can help re-balance your body to its unique ideal weight, and drastically improve your overall health:

My brother- in -law just moved to France and lost 12 lbs. in six weeks.  The only difference is that he doesn't have a car and walks everywhere.

You don't see many fat people in downtown San Francisco either (other than tourists I mean), and eating is a form of entertainment there.

If he is like me, I didn't find much in the way of a good breakfast in France.  Croisants or pastry is not my idea of a substantial breakfast like I am used to everyday. They also have no clue as to how to make a proper American sandwich with all the variety like a Subway has either.  I hope he is not starving off those pounds and they are truely contributed to more exercise and better quality food sans-HFCS.  Good for him!

my daughter and her 3 kids just moved in with us from another state --I am so glad she is here where I can help her as she has been through a very difficult time(her now ex is in prison). It has been quite an adjustment for all of us and getting them to eat healthy is quite a challenge. Society does not make it easy to raise kids these days. When my girls were little there was a lot of junk of course but the proliferation of it now is so scary. I took my 5 yr old grand son with me to grocery store and all the stuff I don't even notice before is all at his eye level marketed with colorful cartoon or movie characters. And as if the fake, over packaged(bad for the planet also)foods were not bad enough even those that look healthy are not. I could not find even one kid friendly, whole wheat bread that did not have  HFCS in it! Then the ice cream truck comes down our block 2 - 3 times a day and the kids are wanting that--and of course all the neighbor kids they play with are getting fake ice cream or are drinking pop or eating junk in front of them every single day!!! I have fruit juice popcicles and organic ice cream for occasional treats and unlimited real fruit and other  healthy foods for treats but it is never enough. And of course because they have been in such an abusive, chaotic situation it is so hard to say no to them allt he time. They are all thin and active. this might sound really terrible but I was so frustrated one day when they were begging for more treats as the neighbor boy got junk and they did not that I told them they would end up fat like that boy if they wanted to eat like he does! Later I sat them down and explained that while what I said was true(he is fat!) they were not to call the boy fat(which I had heard them do) and it is not his fault that his parents don't care enough about his health to feed him right. One bright spot --they love going to the farmers market with us and picking out fresh stuff!

Debrah,

Good for you, you are a good grandmother/mother.  I hope they are all listening to you.  I have trid to enlighten my daughters, with my 3yr. old grandson's health at risk, but they just roll their eyes and talk behind my back, I am sure.  They think I am some kind of kook!!  My daughter is expecting my 2nd grandchild in a few weeks, Thank God she breastfeeds.  I am so conerned about their soy intake, especially my grandson.  She thinks it is a health food and she's doing something good!

Keep up the good work.

Paulette

Most of them are confused and lost, if they are interested in their health there is tons of  dis-info out there..

I think Dr Mercolas no grain diet and his health plan can buck this trend.

Stopping all intake of grains and sugars combined with moderate exercise is the best and safest way to loose weight as efficiently as possible.

No Grains and No Sugars..  this is the main staple of their diets people.. and when they understand what is really healthy for them and what causes them to get fat... then they can take control of their life and body!

Also no PHO's, HFCS, MSG's, and fast foods/ fried foods.. get off the diet foods and drinks they are a scam!!! Low fat on a label means high carb in the form of HFCS usually.. pure sugar!~

I agree Jeremy. I likes this article as its close to the bone for many people even today. The problem is the availability and the mass propaganda in advertising that makes society think that we are deprived if we don't have certain levels of eating on a daily basis. Take out the processed grains ( I love my brown rice) and sugars and you will have a healthier start. However its the alcohol , lack of exercise , obsession with restaurants and cafe culture and emotional stresses that really help increase obesity. Research has shown that children who are obese have a much greater chance of staying obese as adults as oppossed to adults who put on the beef later in life. I see too many obese kids and thats scary! love dom ox

I would expect the percentage to be a bit higher actually. In any case, I am disgusted to watch people's habits and see what they do to their children so early. Babies with juice or soda in their bottles, kids shoveling cheetos into their mouths, adolescents eating like football players and sucking down caffeine milkshakes from Starbucks. I am also noticing more and more thin parents with overweight children.

If you walk through airports at random, which i do monthly, that portion of the population is already at these very scary numbers.

And if you work for TSA,  you're even farther down the road to excessive chunkiness-at least that's my casual observation...
